Hinterland is a 4 episode (so far) series set in Wales. Apparently it was filmed in English and Welsh. Netflix of course has the English dialogue version online. The opening credits are in English and Welsh.
Tom Mathias (Richard Harrington) is an English(?) police detective working in Wales. Something in his past has hurt him badly. He frowns all of the time. He lives in a "caravan" in which he keeps a photograph of two little girls. Presumably his daughters, But we the audience don't know what's happened to them. Killed in a tragic accident? Murdered? Living with mother after unhappy divorce and he's not allowed to see them for some reason? In the third episode he's very sympathetic to a man living in a caravan who's divorced and banned from seeing his two sons.
He doesn't speak Welsh and the local officers have to point places out on the map for him.
For some unexplained reason his boss doesn't seem to like him and is always hindering his investigations. Maybe its just because obstructionist bosses are the in thing or maybe they have a past we don't yet know about.
Oddly enough, the actor is actually Welsh even though the character isn't.
According to wikipedi the Welsh title of the series Y Gwyll actually means "The Dusk". A second season is planned for later this year.
