Hinterland is a 4 episode (so far) series set in Wales. Apparently it was filmed in English and Welsh. Netflix of course has the English dialogue version online. The opening credits are in English and Welsh.

Tom Mathias (Richard Harrington) is an English(?) police detective working in Wales. Something in his past has hurt him badly. He frowns all of the time. He lives in a "caravan" in which he keeps a photograph of two little girls. Presumably his daughters, But we the audience don't know what's happened to them. Killed in a tragic accident? Murdered? Living with mother after unhappy divorce and he's not allowed to see them for some reason? In the third episode he's very sympathetic to a man living in a caravan who's divorced and banned from seeing his two sons.

He doesn't speak Welsh and the local officers have to point places out on the map for him.

For some unexplained reason his boss doesn't seem to like him and is always hindering his investigations. Maybe its just because obstructionist bosses are the in thing or maybe they have a past we don't yet know about.

Oddly enough, the actor is actually Welsh even though the character isn't.

According to wikipedi the Welsh title of the series Y Gwyll actually means "The Dusk". A second season is planned for later this year.

Sounds interesting GuybrushThreepwood. I don't get netflix online so probably will never get to see it.

I quite liked this series, and am looking forward to the continuation after the cliffhanger. It reminded me of the Swedish based Wallander series.

I'm waiting for the second season. Dark drama, but interesting. Just have to be in a happy mood before I watch.

I might have to give this a second shot after reading these posts. I watched episode one and part of the second episode before I bailed on the series. It is possible that I didn't like it as much because I watched it right after watching The Fall that I really enjoyed.

It's nice to be important but it is much more important to be nice.

It's too bad (in this case anyway) those of you that like Wallander isn't swedes.
The movies that were made here are in my opinion a lot better.
But perhaps I'm just a grumpy old woman, hehe. lol
