I have heard of others who had similar problems with SecuRom and Alter Ego. I hope someone here will be able to help you.

There's a NoCD for the German version, which also uses SecuROM, that you can try. I don't know if the German NoCD will work with the English version, but if it does, it's by far the least expensive solution. Google for
Alter Ego NoCD

The game didn't work for me either, and at the time I bought it there was no NoCD available, so my "solution" was to give away the game and watch a playthrough of the game on YouTube.

This is the YouTube playthrough I used
https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLAEC59925A3CE4BF8

If you really want to play Alter Ego yourself, you can buy it on Steam for $9.99.

There is no telling whether SecuROM isn't allowing you to play your game because it doesn't like your DVD drive, because it found some (perfectly legal) software on your hard drive that it blacklisted for some reason, or because it's conflicting with a different copy "protection" from another game. You can try buying and testing different DVD drives with it, but there's no guarantee that it's the DVD drive that's the problem. It's cheaper to buy the Steam version -- cheaper still to watch the YouTube playthrough.

In most cases the unpacked contents of the patch replaces the games executable, for this game C:\Program Files(x86)\Viva Media\Alter Ego US\RunDev.exe - These days applying patches of this sort is a requirement for legitimate owners. It's just a little something the publishers didn't take into consideration when they originally sold the games smile

The German patch will not work for the US version (unless it's been changed since I tried).

It sounds like your disc may be dirty or the drive itself may be beginning to fail.

Oh well. I guess that's not going to work then.
I don't know of a patch for the English version.

Well it's been about 5 years since I bought Alter Ego, it failed to play due to SecuROM v7, and I realized I'd thrown away $40.00 on crippleware. My drive still works fine with games -- just not with SecuROM v7. So I wouldn't be too concerned about Robert's drive unless it has problems with other non-SecuROM game discs.

If you own a legal version of the game, you have a right to be able to play it.
If you'd downloaded a warez version instead of buying a legit version, then it would be illegal and not supported here at Gameboomers.

Probably the best way to go - Too bad GOG doesn't offer it, they're the only site I purchase from these days.

I bought a download version on Amazon.com 2 years ago for less than that, and it worked fine on my Windows 7 64 bit computer.

hi all, this is not A NEW post as didn't know how to resurrect the old one. i first broached this a while ago, something about SecurRom, that hideous copyright protection. i tried reinstalling Alter Ego, this time saving my progress and wondered if saving makes any difference or if anything has changed. robert.

I'll combine this thread with your old thread.

I don't know what you mean by "I tried reinstalling Alter Ego, this time saving my progress and wondered if saving makes any difference or if anything has changed."

Saving what progress?

If SecuROM doesn't work on your computer, and there's no NoCD for the game, you have to buy a download version if you want to play it.
