Hi Mary,
Just click on the compass in inventory; it should go up into one corner and remain open.
I'm assuming when you say "intersection" you're referring to the turntable. Around the edge of the turntable you'll see 4 gearboxes. There is what looks like a small wooden post next to one of these boxes. Open a door on it and turn the crank inside clockwise; this will rotate the turntable 90

Mary, it sounds like you're trying to use an item from inventory on that walkway but that's not what's needed. There's a small latch on the right edge of the walkway that you need to click on.

Mary, the pipe and controls on the left are for the gate across the train track. You need to be using the ones on the right. If the gauge rises when you turn the valve, you're in business; if not, go back to the steam room and open (turn to the left) the 3rd valve from the left.
Back with Amanda, pulling the lever moves the magnet toward the rocks; pushing it moves it toward Amanda. It takes several pushes or pulls to move it the whole distance. Before you get it moving it's directly over your head so you can't see it until you move it.
Hope this helps. Let me know if you need more help with it after you get it moving.

Mary, that control lever is a little tricky since it moves both directions. You have to click and drag it the direction you want; pull it toward you to move the magnet toward the conveyor. I think you automatically turn toward the conveyor when you pull the lever. Then you have to turn back toward Amanda and pull the lever again to move the magnet the rest of the way.

If the gauge rises when you turn the valve, you have steam pressure; that's all you can do in the steam room. We're talking about the pipe and controls on the right; the one's on the left are completely separate although they need pressure too.
Turn that right valve to the left so the gauge rises (clockwise direction). Now, all you have to do is operate the lever. Click and drag it toward you. You should see a cut scene looking in the other direction and watching the magnet move from over your head toward the conveyor along the far wall. Now turn back toward Amanda and pull that lever toward you again to see another cut scene with the magnet going the rest of the way to the conveyor.
Turn back toward Amanda and push the red button to pick up a chunk of iron ore with the magnet (all the rocks are not iron ore so not all of them are magnetic).
