Unique biofeedback-enhanced horror title challenges players' puzzle solving and stress management skills

Los Angeles, CA, 3/31 —Flying Mollusk’s flagship biofeedback horror game, Nevermind, is now available to the public via Steam Early Access.
Nevermind is an award-winning, critically-acclaimed game that uses off-the-shelf biofeedback sensors to create a uniquely haunting experience that can also help players manage feelings of anxiety and stress. Flying Mollusk ran a successful Kickstarter campaign in Fall of 2014 for Nevermind, and has partnered with Intel to utilize Intel® RealSense™ camera technology in the gaming sector.

In Nevermind, players take the role of Neuroprobers, specialized physicians who use cutting-edge technology to venture into the minds of victims devastated by psychological trauma, exploring the darkest and most surreal corners of their subconscious minds while solving puzzles to ultimately help them come to terms with their past.

At the time of launch, Nevermind’s unique biofeedback features can be activated with a variety of sensor options - including any RealSense-enabled laptop. A full list of available sensors can be found on www.nevermindgame.com/sensors/, with more due to be added as development continues. Nevermind can also be enjoyed without any sensors - playing more as a more traditional, non-biofeedback enhanced, but equally engaging, game.

“We’re excited to be able to bring Nevermind’s unique psychological-horror experience to a wider audience through Steam,” said Erin Reynolds, Creative Director of Flying Mollusk. “Early Access allows us to garner feedback from players, in integrate it into the final game, which means a better game for everyone.”

Steam’s Early Access program allows anyone to purchase and digitally download a beta, in-development work-in-progress version of Nevermind for their Mac or PC. This program gives players the opportunity to provide feedback to the development team that will help inform, improve, and uniquely shape the ongoing development of Nevermind.

Happy Gaming!

This really interests me but the cheapest sensor I see is like $77.00. That's. a lot of money to play a game.

You don't need it to play. You can still enjoy the game without.

Wouldn't it be more likely to teach you not to get excited by horror games?
And wouldn't that negate the point of playing them?

Personally, I don't really want to have so much stress in a game that I might need to "manage" it crazy

Plus .. stress in games for me (including the horror genre) usually comes from having to cope with timed events - not the content of the events whistle

Mad, Don't tell me you didn't enjoy what happened when you went crawling in the furnace in Scratches.

Oh, I will admit there are a couple of times when things have "got to me" and that particular part in Scratches is certainly one !! scared

But they are few and far between.

I'm racking my brains now, trying to think of another ..in an Adventure game, that is laugh

How about in Dark Fall: The Journal, where you suddenly see a shadow flit down the hallway.
Or Dark Fall: Lights Out, where you suddenly see the mannequin in the diorama looking at you.
Pretty much any Jon Boakes game would have moments like that.
Harmless events, but scary because of the way they're presented, and the feeling of suspense that's been building up as you explore.
Increasing suspense to the point that small things like that can scare you is part of the thrill of playing horror games.

Maybe Nevermind will be a good game, and I suspect most of us would be playing it without the sensors.
But I don't see the point of trying to decrease your "stress" level while playing a horror game when the "stress" or "suspense" is part of the fun.

I can't say I got to feel stressed in the particular games you mention, Jenny100.
The "shock tactics" some developers utilise don't tend to do it for me.

But yes, suspense and/or anticipation I CAN find unsettling yes

The old "Realms of the Haunting" (although it felt more like an action adventure to me) and the also old Phantasmagoria games are some examples that come to mind laugh

And doesn't that feeling add to the experience of playing a horror game?
Why would you want to reduce it?

I'm not sure that the suspense (or sense of dread) you get while playing a horror game is equivalent to the negative type of stress you can get in your daily life, which is usually more about frustration and finances.

Maybe using the sensors while using tax software to do your taxes would do more to teach you how to control real life stress.

I don't think it's off topic. Nevermind is advertised as using the sensors to train you to reduce stress with biofeedback. I assume Nevermind will have mounting suspense, similar to the other games mentioned in this thread, rather than being a survival horror type where you are frequently attacked by zombies or whatnot. The games that have been mentioned are just examples to show how mounting tension can add to the game experience. Since no one here has played Nevermind yet, I can't point to examples from Nevermind.

I played a bit yesterday and so far no real suspense, but maybe it'll get there.

The game reminds a bit along the lines of Overclocked. It is an exploration game and you need to uncover the past of your patients to help them. It's interesting and you do not need sensors to play.
