First of all let me say I don't really know where to go to ask this question so I hope you can help me. I have an e-mail account with Microsoft through
MSN Hotmail and have used to for a very long time. This morning I received an e-mail supposedly from administrative accounts for Hotmail. They wanted me to click on a link to verify my hotmail account with them. They stated that my e-mail service may be interrupted if I do not do this. They went on further to state that my account may be not working correctly due to such things as someone illegally using my account, changes in my address, phone
etc. I have not had any issues with my e-mail on this hotmail account so I didn't click on the link and respond to them. Is it possible this is a
legitimate e-mail from Microsoft? I can't imagine why they would need to contact me. Thanks for any suggestions.

It's a scam. Kudos to you for being skeptical and NOT clicking on anything in the email!! Read more here...

It doesn't sound legitimate at all.
It sounds like a phishing email.

You can log into your hotmail account yourself, and make sure things are working, but don't click the link in that email.

You can report the phish if you want.
There is information on how to report a phishing email for Outlook and Hotmail ***here***.

Quote:
For non- Outlook or Hotmail customers should address an email to report_spam@outlook.com. Attach a copy of the spam email to this email and send it. If we do not receive a copy of the email as an attachment our ability to take action against the spamming account is severely impacted.

Note: We ask for a full copy of the email so that we have conclusive evidence showing from which Outlook/Hotmail account the SPAM was sent. It is possible that the email address was spoofed, and we don't want to mistakenly close a non-spamming account.
