I'll do my best to make this card trick as clear as possible...

A regular 52card deck is shuffled, then placed face down on table.

You turn over top card and place it face up on table;
say it's a 9: you turn over next card and "say" 10;
another for 11, another for 12, finally another for 13.
So you now have a stack of 5 cards: turn it over face down;
do not change the order of the cards!

Similarly, you create a 2nd stack; say it's a Jack;
then you go 11, another card for 12, another for 13;
so you now have a 2nd stack of 3 cards: turn it over face down;
do not change the order of the cards!

Similarly, you create a 3rd pile; say it's a 6;
then you go 6, another card for 7, and so on up to 13;
so you now have a 3rd stack of 8 cards: turn it over face down;
do not change the order of the cards!

OK; I'm the "magician!"; I've asked you to do the above
but left the room while you were setting up your 3 stacks.

Now you turn over your 3 stacks face down; the 3 top cards
will of course be the 9, the Jack and the 6 from above.

Now I come back and take the stack containing the leftover
cards: that would be 36 cards: 52 - 5 - 3 - 8 = 36. OK?

I count the cards in this stack, so I know there is 36 left.

I then tell you to turn over the top card of any 2 (your choice)

Say you turn over the 6 and the Jack:
I then say a few abracadabras and announce:
the top card in the leftover pile is a 9 !

HOW did I know?

Hint:
when I see the 6 and the Jack, that tells me
those 2 stacks contained 8 and 3 cards.

So the two stacks contain a total of 11 cards. A total of 16 cards have been removed from the deck which means that the third pile consists of 5 cards. Since each stack counts up to 13 the last card has to be....13-12-11-10-(9)! Clever.

Did you ever stop to think and then forget to start again?

Yaggotit Cue!

Works similarly for other cases, like 4 stacks.

Top cards: 3,5,6*,9
So 11,9,8,5 cards in the stacks
52-11-9-8-5 = 19 cards left

Turned up: 3,5,9
So 11+9+5 = 25 cards in those 3 stacks

Left for remaining pile = 52-19-25 = 8 cards
So its top card = 6*
