Have played "Learn Icelandic" game. Then turned around to get note book from couch, but it isn't there.
Have followed the walkthrough to this point. Have I missed a trigger somewhere?

The pages that you find on the couch are a special extra only included in the Bonus Edition of Sea of Darkness - if you aren't finding anything on the couch, that would be the reason. They aren't necessary for completion of the game.
