The manual says to press E to equip/use/activate an item. I've been trying to pick things up, but so far all I seem to do is pick them up and toss them around. They don't go into inventory. I've used the enter key as well with no success. I was able to pick up one item and it did go into inventory, but I don't know what I did or how it happened. Can anyone help me? Do you know what I'm doing wrong? I'm playing the pc version on Win 7. I have the legendary edition of Skyrim. Hope to hear from you soon, I'm really anxious to play (finally).

I'm pretty sure it's "E". What is it you are trying to pick up? It could be something that you can manipulate but isn't allowed in your inventory or your inventory could be full. Did you possibly remap your keys? Son said he would check his computer to be sure luck

Thanks L4L but I did not remap anything. I was able to pickup a kettle and add it to inventory (don't know how I did it). But I've tried with a potato and a basket with no luck so far. I do get a direction that says "Take" which I thought meant add to inventory, but it doesn't. It will pickup the item and then move it around. I don't know why they would make such a basic command so difficult to do. I've seen walkthru's that picked a lot of things up without difficulty but naturally I can't see what keys they are hitting. I'll look again at a walkthru and try to observe more closely how they do it.

Son loaded his game up. It is indeed "e"....mouse over and you should see a screen message that says "Push e to take" Mouse over, push e, and it goes in. Son gets a message on the left of his screen saying the item has been added. Push "i" to open your inventory and then pick the type of thing you want to see from the menu on the left of the screen. You may have to scroll down to see all the things in your inventory. Is it food you can only 'eat' and not store perhaps? luck

No, it's not just food. I've been trying to take a couple potions. I have the mouse cursor on the potion and it says press e to take. I press e and nothing happens except if I move the mouse, the potion moves too. I press e again and it drops the potion. I've been able to pickup items in a drawer. It says take all take all and I hit enter or e and it goes into my inventory. Can't figure out what's wrong. I think it's me - I'm missing something, but I don't know what it is. The potions should have gone into inventory.

Edit: What is the difference between deliberately picking up an item to move it and picking up an item to add it to inventory? I mean actions taken.

You can pick up items to move them around, for instance put a basket from one place to another while the basket may not be something you can actually put in your inventory. E does a lot of the interaction in this game. My guess is you are thinking you can add things to your inventory that you can't, if you were able to take things from the drawer. Or else you may not be seeing what you added....can you scroll down list of inventory types on the left when you push "i"?

Make sure you only tap the E key. Holding it for to long puts you into grab mode IIRC.

mj2c - You were right! I was holding the e too long and it was doing drag and drop. I tried just jabbing quickly and it made all the difference. I can now pickup potatoes, kettles, and even potions dance

Thanks to L4L and son and mj2c for getting me past this major block in this game. Now I can practice movement and other stuff to get me going. I'm going back for a grand iron sword I wasn't able to take before. Now if I can just tell the difference between friend and foe I will be able to do fierce battle. Though I usually do a fighter/mage mix in RPG's, this time I think I will concentrate on the magic and see how I do - with some swordplay if necessary. That means I won't have to struggle with armor and armor repair.

I'm so thrilled I can play now yay I knew gameboomers would fix me.

thanks mj2c, sometimes it's a little thing.

SharonB, glad you figured it out. I hate when something is not working right for me. Have fun luck
