Those who dream by day are cognizant of many things which escape those who dream only by night.
Edgar Allan Poe (1809 - 1849), "Eleonora"

`````````````````````````
We think of graffiti as something contemporary, but it has been around for centuries. In ancient Rome, when you had a written message for the public, you scratched it on a wall. What else could you do? You didn’t have a fax machine, a photocopier, or the World Wide Web. You couldn’t even take out an ad in a newspaper.
The walls of Pompeii, preserved for two thousand years under volcanic ash, are marked with numerous examples of this Roman custom. Here is some ancient graffiti form the walls of Pompeii:
* Successus was here.
* Gaius Julius Primigenius was here. Why are you late?
* Lovers, like bees, lead a honey-sweet life.
* I don’t want to sell my husband.
* Burglar, watch out!
* Someone at whose table I do not dine, Lucius Istacidius, is a barbarian to me.
* The fruit sellers ask you to elect Marcus Holconius Priscus as aedile.
* I am amazed, o wall, that you have not collapsed and fallen, since you must bear the tedious stupidities of so many scrawlers.
The custom of wall writing has occurred worldwide and continues to the present, though advances in the technology of paint have made it more of an opportunity both for art and for defacement on a grand scale. But it was the example of Pompeii that gave the world, and the English language, an Italian word for it: graffiti.
Graffiti probably reached it’s peak of popularity in the 70′s. There was so much political activism, social activisim, poetry, pot and deep thoughts, and not an easy way to anonymously express your ideas. These days, the internet provides much of a relief valve for what has long been expressed in graffiti. It’s definitely still out there, but it just might be slowing down. Just in case some of the greatest and funniest graffiti sayings of all time begin to fade away and disappear, this page will be adding to the list. Please feel free to send in your favorites… Here are a few of a growing collection to get it started…
“TOLIET CAMERA IS FOR RESEARCH USE ONLY”
“Time is what keeps everything from happening all at once.”
“Humpty Dumpty was pushed, man!”
“Always remember: Beauty is only a light switch away.”
“If pro is opposite of con, then what is the opposite of progress?”
“Help, the paranoids are after me!”
(Under a sign that said: “Employees Must Wash Hands”)
I waited and waited, but I finally washed them myself.
Is it Fall yet? shocked
I spent all morning mowing and eating weeds, and I've had my fill....of the heat. blech
If this is what being a senior is like, I want to be a junior again. smirk
Then again, my body might be in better shape if I had discovered how wonderful naps are earlier in life. yes
The Captain and Gilligan could have gotten lost again in the time I was napping today. snicker
After the nap I felt better, so I did laundry, did dished, cleaned Pepper's penthouse, vacuumed, remade the bed, folded and hung up clothes, and now here I am again, needing a nap. tired
It's a good thing I have to get up at 3:30am. That just about makes it bedtime. woot
I hope you all have a great Monday, and if that's theoretically impossible, as it is for me, then have a happy day. thumbsup
Nice to hear someone has summer. Although we have warmth since yesterday we have thunderstorms. It's been rain rain rain here since April and way below normal temps. I want real summer! I will gladly trade with anyone.
I have PT this afternoon and canceled my morning gym class. Second day of migraine. frown
Have a great day all!
Is it really Monday? The weekend flew by. Been so busy with 'stuff' around here. Actually made nicey-nice with 2 police guys who came to the Squatter's house. I ambushed them as they came back to their car. I wanted to know what the deal was with the handcuffed guy who they let go. They wanted to know WHO those people were, and I got to give a brief explanation of everything and lament about not getting anyone to help us. Might just have been a spark to start the fire going, especially when I mentioned drug sales. Now they are doing 'extra patrol' over there. Car goes by slowly every few hours just watching.
Today I go to the police station to turn in an application for Citizen's Academy. They are trying to up the image of the polilce by bringing in citizens, hoping that people will feel safer and better about the responses we have been getting. Only 34 can be accepted for a police/citizen learn to know each other and get some training in guns, car chases, arrests, self defense, etc. It's 10 weeks, 3 hours one night a week. Hope I get accepted. Made my friend/tenant fill out an application too. We drove over to our police department and guess what? You can't get IN. It's stupid. We have a HUGE building, mega tax-payer dollars and it's CLOSED on Sundays, Huh? Only open on week days from 9-5 pm and you have to be buzzed in after picking up the phone on the wall and stating why you need to see the receptionist. Geez. She's in a glass box and not very friendly. (Dealt with her once before). Imagine NOT being able to walk into your police station for help? Appointment only? Duh!
Well, got all the way to the doc's and found out he was in surgery and we had to reschedule. At least they told me and didn't leave us sitting there waiting lol
Ran errands on the way home and then went upstairs to finish a book I'd been trying to finish for quite a while happydance
Now back to life.
Happy skooshing, Darlene.
Ana, sorry about the migraine. Hope it goes away soon.
Nan, hope the procedure is safe, simple, and successful.
Sorta, appointment only police rotfl
Well, I got home from shopping and had TWO messages from my dentist asking if I could come in NOW. My permanent cap had arrived, and they had a cancelation from someone who had a 2 hour appointment scheduled, so I drove back the way I had just come, and in 1 hour am all done with the dentist for awhile. Nice. Got a tooth in my head again in the front. Bad when front tooth breaks. Yuk.
Wish I was kidding about the appointment police bit. Sad. I never heard of such a thing. You have to get in, be screened by a little lady behind glass, are given a bunch of paperwork to fill out and THEN be prepared to wait a minimum of TWO hours to talk to someone. What kind of police is that?
Tooth in mouth now. Gotta be careful eating. No more biting anything with my front teeth. All stuff must be cut in pieces, no apples, corn on the cob, hard bread, etc. I told the dentist I was going home and eating a hard candied apple. He paused and then laughed. Geez. Like I would chance ruining a 1500 dollar dental job??
