I was going to run my AdwCleaner and it needed to be updated. When I tried to run it I got this error message: Autoit error line 14774, Error variable must be of type "Object". Could you possibly tell me what this means and how to fix it? Thanks, Terri Let me add that Windows Defender is turned off and I cannot turn it on. When I originally booted up the HP PC the MSE was off. I run it nightly before shutting down the PC. Anyway I had to reinstall it and it is working.
If MSE and Windows Defender are the same, why does it still say the PC is not protected?

I have no idea about the AdwCleaner. Maybe uninstall and redownload.
Defender and MSE were not one and the same until Windows 8. Defender in earlier operating systems was more of a spam filter - assuming I remember that correctly.
EDIT: It was anti-spyware.

That does sound correct. Well, I did reinstall the AdwCleaner, no help. Ok, so I do need Windows Defender, correct? I did go into services to be sure it is set on automatic and it is, so looks like I'm sunk. Thanks!

Where are you downloading Adwcleaner from? This is where I go. I had problems when I tried to download from a different site. AdwCleaner

Hi. I've always used Bleeping computer. Earlier today I found Linkury.A when I ran Malwarebytes and it quarantined it. I have no idea what's going on. Looks like I'm going to have to stop using the pc, I'm just making a mess of things, lol Thanks Winfrey.

You can read about Linkury.A *** HERE *** It was probably packed inside the download from Bleeping Computer - It's always best to download directly from the source (although these days even they seem to pack little unwanted extras).

I have run just about everything I can and I still cannot get AdwCleaner or Windows Defender to work. This time I used JRT and Hitman Pro and cleaned out the cache from my browsers. Hitman found: ads.cetra.com ads.linkedin.com casalemedia.com collective-media.net doubleclick.net revsci.net Inland, I think the d/load for Adwcleaner on that link is from CNet. No bueno! What would happen if I did a restore back to a week ago, would that remove what ever is causing the problem? You guys have been such a help. I keep doing this to my PC! I have noticed before when I'm doing something a page has popped up and I "assume" it's the one I'm supposed to click on to finish what I'm doing. As soon as I realize that it isn't I click it off but I think it's too late!

Terri, as I said in my first post answering you, assuming this is on a non-Windows 8 computer, not having Defender turned on is no big deal. As I said before, it is more of an anti-spyware program on Windows 7 and Vista.
The one you want to make sure is running is Microsoft Security Essentials. If I remember, my Defender was turned off on my Windows 7 because I was running Malwarebytes Pro.
Yes, run like the wind from any downloads from CNET. Talked to an installer at our American Legion a few weeks ago. He installs Keno systems all over the country and we got to talking about infected downloads - I mentioned the worst offender is CNET and he laughed and said he KNEW he was going to get infected when he had to download something he absolutely had to have and CNET was the only place he could find it. Sure enough, he spent 2 hours getting rid of all kinds of cr*p.

Ok. I am wanting to be certain that I have nothing bad on my PC because I will be having to pay my bills sooner or later.
Now, I had removed, or thought I had removed my AdwCleaner, found it in downloads and at the top it has: AdwCleaner-v5.002-Xplode-Toolslib. That's the one I started to d/load from but hit the X to backout of it when I realized it wasn't the one I wanted.

I absolutely agree on that! Now, is that toolslib going to give me trouble. And........why is it you can have this cra_ on your pc but you can't find it in ad/remove or any where for that matter? Sorry Jenny, missed your post. No, this is on my HP with Vista OS. As for the Cyberpower, it looks like it cloned by what I could see running but we have not remove the old drive to see if the new drive will work. It actually didn't take very long though.

My AdwCleaner which I downloaded from Bleeping Computer in March is called adwcleaner_4.112
If you x'ed out of the download, then you shouldn't have it listed anywhere.

Went into my downloads and created one an hour ago. I darn well remember toolslib, and when it came up I x'ed it out. If I did it again I'm going to check myself in to a hospital. I'm going to have to go back and look and perhaps remove any and all AdwCleaner's and start over. I had several on here trying to get one to work. Ok, now..........is toolslib something I want to seek out and remove? I took a pic of it and it is AdwCleaner-v5.002-Xplode-Toolslib. Thanks again. I'll check back in a bit, going off for about an hour.

I believe that's the right one - AdwCleaner is from a company in France. Malwaretips.org is a site I use a LOT to clean computers. They are great about specific instructions and pictures to help. They say to download it from here... https://toolslib.net/downloads/finish/1/

I don't Drac. I do know that the developer is Xplode, a company in France, but not sure about toolslib. I've downloaded from the developer at least once, way back.

I believe you have the right one - toolslib is where you downloaded it from. I'm downloading it from there right now too - it's toolslib.net. Nary a piece of spyware or foistware in it. This is the page after you click on AdwCleaner... https://toolslib.net/downloads/viewdownload/1-adwcleaner/
