That's a good guess, Bernie. Light travels at 186,000 mi/sec. Lightning is slower.

The lightning has to ionize the air to create a path. I'm scratching my head on what that speed might be but I will go with the speed of sound. Maybe the ionization would travel at the same rate that a sound wave would.

The speed of sound varies according to temperature, but it's comparatively slow at 760 mph. That's why we see the lightning before we hear the thunder.
