Twice this week my new computer has had to be shut down with the power button as it just keeps spooling away saying that it is shutting down but isn't. It is not updating, just spooling.

??

Yes, try the MSCONFIG first. I had the shutdown problem and saw a strange file in my processes. When I deleted it, the computer shut down.

Sometimes a computer running windows 8 or above can take along time to shut down because it is getting ready to install updates. I have seen windows 8 stuck on the shutdown screen for 5 minutes or better and then all of a sudden you see the message about updates being done and not to shut down your computer.

I would run a deep scan with malwarebytes.

Same happens with Windows 10, Donald. There is no indication (icon in task bar) that updates are downloading or installing unless you go into settings and updates.

I've noticed that happens to me if I turn off any USB device BEFORE the computer shuts-down. I have an illuminated keyboard and if I turn it off first my computer usually won't shut-down.

I didn't find anything and haven't had this happen again since I posted but I've been waiting just a little bit after closing whatever I've been in and checking under task manager before shutting down just to make sure nothing is still running holding things up. I hope by saying that I'm not jinxing myself!
