I am running windows 7 64 bit and am trying to play Tex Murphy Overseer. There is no sound. I have followed a suggestion on Steam of backing up the game the uninstalling and then tried to restore but this did not work. Has anyone else had this problem and has anyone else been able to fix it. I have played all his other games and had no problems.

welcome to GameBoomers.

Someone on the GOG forum had the same problem with this game, and this solution worked for him:

Quote:
Go to Configuration > Audio and select Microsoft Midi Mapper. Quit and restart the game. When the game starts, there will be a pop up menu, select to run with ffdshow or there will be no sound during the FMV sections.

If this doesn't work for you, hopefully some of our techies can provide other suggestions.

Thanks for the advise. I went to configuration > audio and midi mapper. Then quit and restarted game. I didn't get a pop up menu about ffdshow. I looked around on steam about ffdshow and I guess I would have to install this first. The only problem I have with that is that there are comments about installing ffdshow and getting adware installed along with it. Don't want that. Unless I can find out more about this, Maybe it's just not worth trying to play this game. Thanks

I really hope that someone here will be able to offer more help.

There is a prior GameBoomers thread here where someone had no sound and the suggestions in this thread got the game working with sound. It's a bit convoluted, but maybe something in this thread would help.

Is this the GOG version or the original CD's?

Marian - I went to that thread you suggested and went to Start - typed in REGEDIT - enter. Then once there highlighted HKEY_CURRENT_USER and then clicked edit, find - entered ffdshow. Saw the GNU and ffdshow and ffdshow audio listed. This is where it got complicated for me. The suggestion was to delete JNU reg and ffdshow. I right clicked on GNU and there was a delete option but I was unsure whether I should do this and if I did would I screw something else up. So I chickened out and didn't delete.
I ran the game again and although I do not have any sound during the video scenes I get sound during the other parts. This might be good enough for me. Thanks for all your help.

Well, some sound is better than no sound; thanks for giving us the progress report. thumbsup

Keep watching this thread, though, in case someone is able to help you obtain *all* of the sound. And I think it was wise not to mess with the GNU registry entry unless an expert can positively confirm that it won't affect anything else. wave

I'm a big Tex Murphy fan - it's worth the hassle to get it running properly. yes

Thanks, I agree. I am also a big Tex Murphy fan so for me some sound is better than none and still worth playing

You could always back up your registry and/or make a restore point before trying the fix.

If you have something else listed under
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\GNU

besides

ffdshow
ffdshow_audio

then deleting the entire GNU key would probably affect that something.

Maybe deleting only the ffdshow and ffdshow_audio and not the entire GNU key would be safer? (at least if there's something else listed under the GNU key).

I'm not sure since I haven't tried the fix myself, and you might have something else under your GNU key that I don't.

Maybe Inland can explain better than I can.

When you right click the GNU key the content menu should also show an export function. Choosing this option will allow you to import the values again if it causes a problem. All you do to restore them is double click the file you created when you exported it.

I'm fairly sure the Steam version is identical to the GOG release, so be sure to select the XING MPG driver for video and the MS MIDI mapper for Audio. Also check the volume level for audio, make sure it's high enough.

I replayed the GOG version several months back without any issues.
