Kathleen Chitty, a British woman who inspired Kathy's Song now lives in a quiet Welsh village though her name is known to millions worldwide.
Paul and Art spent some time in England before they became famous. Paul and Kathy fell in love and she went to America with them where they soon became overnight sensations with the song ‘Sound of Silence’
Paul Simon once described his relationship with Kathy as ‘his most peaceful time’
.
Kathy is mentioned by name twice in ‘America’ and the song ‘Homeward Bound’ is about returning from a gig in Widnes to see her in Essex.
But perhaps the most poignant is ‘Kathy’s Song’ which he wrote about missing her while in New York.
Kathy herself was and still is a very private, shy woman, so being under the media spotlight was so disturbing for her that she returned home to England but of course the world wide media pursued her then and over the years so determined to publish the intimate details of her relationship with Paul for which they were prepared to pay her a fortune for. But Kathy refused then and even now to discus her love affair with Paul Simon.
They were all rejected by The Sound of Silence.
Perhaps her love affair was too precious to her for to let those greedy hacks get their grubby hands on it. Whatever, to me she is a very special lady.
Was Paul so very much in love with her? The lyrics of her song you can find below, what do you think?
