Today I have a green banner at the top of my Steam pages that says I do not have a phone number associated with my account, with the option to "add phone number" or "not now". It says that a phone number can be used to verify ownership of the account should I lose access to my email account or password.

Yes or No?

This might sound like a dumb question but I don't want to click there if it is somehow not legit, and unfortunately I've read too many of the 'bad experience' stories to be comfortable when I'm asked for anything from Steam.

I do have to enter my phone number every time I place an order.

Thanks.

If you don't trust the banner, there should be some other way to add your phone number.

If you log in, and go to
https://store.steampowered.com/phone/manage

Do you see a place to add the phone number there?

There seems to be a problem at the moment.
I don't know if the people in this thread are using the green banner or trying to add the number elsewhere.

The banner has been popping up for weeks. After you press cancel (I dont want these outfits having my number) it is supposed to remember your choice. If youve opted into the Steam beta program then it still pops up from time to time, because it's still broken.

You may also get Steam telling you you've a new client update to install every time you start even though youve already installed it.

It is legit BTW.

Maybe, but as of this moment it is still malfunctioning for some Steam users.
If you want to give Steam your phone number, I'd look for some place other than the banner.

Legit or not, I don't touch banners with a 10 foot pole.

Especially after reading that the number doesn't "take."
Makes you wonder where your phone number is actually being sent.

By "legit" I meant it is Steams doing rather than your client being hijacked.

I figured that's what you meant, mj2c. However, one of the banes of website management is infected banners. The fact that STEAM would use one is dubious to me at best. There are far better ways to do this.

Thank you! I'm glad I asked.

I only looked at 2 pages of the discussion you linked to Jenny but it seems those were about mobile numbers which I don't use. I am not sure really how/where to sign into my account. I looked under profile last night thinking that was where to go. I guess you mean go to www.steampowered.com or whatever it is? I never have a reason to go there.

Thank you mj2c for your input and confirming it is legit.

And thanks Draclvr. I know I had just been reading on a different board the other day about this stuff.

I will hold off for now.

So I decided to try putting my phone number in today but it is just for cell phones I guess. It says to enter "SMS capable phone". I don't even know what that means. I rarely use a cell phone so I cancelled out of it.

I had no idea either, so I looked it up. Something about short message service and is supposed to mean texting. Who knew... I can build a computer; I can fix a computer... but I only have a stupid phone, not a smart phone!

So, now my Steam account is acting goofy. Taking really long to load pages and then the pages jump. I think it's because I had to sign in even though I was already in there so now somehow I'm signed in twice? Argh. I knew I should have left well enough alone.

Sorry Drac. I did not know what SMS meant but it did say they can then text you which is why I knew cell phone.
