I am tracking down a sound that I just heard in my kitchen/pantry area. It's the second time I've heard it. It's a bit creepy now that it's the 2nd time I've heard it. Loud enough to be heard over TV, etc. and sounds like a metal gong or more like metal gong falling a distance until it stops. Weird. Nothing in my house has fallen, nothing makes any sounds in that area (tried clocks etc) but not once but twice this has happened. Ugh!

I know it's a real sound since my friend was over the first time it happened and he couldn't figure it out either. Describing it is so difficult. Almost like someone hits one of those big gongs (ala the Gong Show) and then the gong falls to the floor, or more like it slides down the wall (still reverberating) until the sound finally dies out.

I'm stumped! What the heck could it be????? duh scared

Do you have anything like a timer on your oven or some other appliance that is going off? This is really strange.

Checked timers, dingers, all that small stuff, but this sound is HUGE. Very loud. Imagine walking into a traditional old world Chinese Restaurant and they have a huge gong and they hit it with that big hitter thingie. Then the whole gong falls off the stand and rolls across the floor for several feet and finally comes to rest on the opposite wall. So weird.

Can't be my imagination because my friend heard it too the first time and we both jumped. Not a cat since my indoorsies are all gone. Don't have any possums or critters in the house now since I blocked the access in the front bedroom floor.

I thought it might be a clock (I collect various fun clocks) but none of those have sound. Thought it might be something falling off the wall and sliding down behind a cabinet. Nope. If it did, it would be metal something. Just sort of echoing but a bit tinny to the ear. A huge gong is all I can think of and I KNOW I don't have one of those. I have everything else, maybe I should get one. haha

One possibility is that a critter is under the house, and somehow managed to twang the water or gas line. It would have to be a BIG twang and involve some musical talent from the critter. I hope it does it again soon so I can run out while it's still reverberating. Maybe I can locate a direction. The last two times it scared me so much (loud) that I just sat there stunned until it stopped. Geez.

Ha ha MaG!

I was thinking of a big cookie sheet, or a sheet of metal on the roof or in the attic. Maybe a pair of cymbals (orchestra size). Very srange Sorta.

Have you had the heater on? Or baked anything in the oven? (Metal cooling)

Could it be the squatters from down the street moving into your attic? haha

It's nice to be important but it is much more important to be nice.

Eeeek! You scared me MaG! Ha.

Yeah cookie sheet or metal baking pans sort of (I checked them) but much more melodic. Cymbals closer but I don't have any of those. My oven makes a huge 'bang' when it is cooling off. Scary too, but I located that one.

SQUATTERS......hahahahahahah! Best guess ever!

I'm still playing the 'tune' over in my head. I thought maybe some computer virus trick that made that sound when you didn't expect it. But the sound is definitely farther back in the house.

Might be the baby raccoons forming a marching band under the house.

Next time...I'm RUNNING for the kitchen the minute the sounds starts instead of being frozen in place. That sound was so unusual, so loud, so unexpected, I just froze in place. Can't imagine what it could be, but someday I will find out.

LOVE the guesses. praise

I am siding with MaG on this one. I've lived with plenty of ghosts and that's my guess.

I solved my noise puzzle!

I was just in my freezer getting out some frozen pork, when an ice cube from an overflowing ice container fell on one of the metal shelves. It made a lovely melodic sound. Soooo remembering that earlier today I found the icemaker way overfull, and had turned off the 'maker', I had seen lots of extra ice cubes way in the back of the keeper almost ready to fall.

Soooo I took some of the ice cubes that I found in the bottom of the freezer (it's all open metal shelving), and guess what???

I poured a handful of cubes on the top metal shelf (freezer is almost empty waiting for pay day) and then I slammed the door closed. AMAZING. The cubes fell through 3 shelves and each one rang in a continuing tone. Very pretty sound and VERY loud even with the door closed. Now I know.

It's just like one of those toy thingies that has metal pellets inside and when you turn it over, they hit metal tubes and make a nice sound.

This is so neat! I have a musical freezer! They never mentioned that in the instruction book. They should add a new chapter: How to make melodies with your new freezer.

Oh boy! Now I can sleep tonight. I guess this only happens when the freezer shelves are empty and the ice cube maker overflows with a bunch of cubes cascading down from shelf to shelf. So awesome.

Sorry guys, no ghosts this time unless they are the ones who made the ice maker overflow. rotfl

Sorta I was going to ask you if you had an ice maker. They certainly can make a lot of noise! Glad you solved the mystery!
