I am about 10 hours into Fallout 4 and my main problem seems to be a 'spacey' mouse. I have to shoot something on the run because my mouse will not stabilize enough to actually aim my weapon. This is going to ruin my game play because even if I adjust to it mentally, it still will inhibit my enjoyment. Everything else seems to be working fine. I occasionally have a crash, but not often and I quick save frequently. Any ideas or clue on how to fix this? Thank you! yes

I found this page. I don't know if it will help, but it's probably worth a try. wave12

This is assuming, of course, that your computer meets the game's system requirements.

If no luck, it would probably be a good idea if a mod were to move this thread over to Glitches - they might be able to help you more over there. wave12

Thank you again. That page helped quite a bit. The mouse is still too wobbly for my taste, but I think I can work around it. I appreciate your help! ;)

I'm glad it is working better. Can you adjust your mouse sensitivity through your mouse software?

I am embarrassed to admit that I have no idea if there is or isn't "mouse software". Can you explain what you mean? Is that in the game or in my PC?

Unless you got yourself a fancy mouse and installed software for it, the closest you have to "mouse software" is the mouse settings in Control Panel.
http://www.wikihow.com/Adjust-a-Mouse-in-Windows-7

But those basic settings won't help if the problem is jitter or floatiness. Floatiness is usually due to the video card being too slow or having video drivers the game doesn't like.

Wow, I'm surprised you've been able to play this at all with that low end video card! It would be good to know what your processor is and how much RAM you have too. Recommended system requirements are:

Windows 7/8/10 (64-bit OS required)
Intel Core i7 4790 3.6 GHz/AMD FX-9590 4.7 GHz or equivalent
8 GB RAM
30 GB free HDD space
NVIDIA GTX 780 3GB/AMD Radeon R9 290X 4GB or equivalent

And minimum requirements are:

Windows 7/8/10 (64-bit OS required)
Intel Core i5-2300 2.8 GHz/AMD Phenom II X4 945 3.0 GHz or equivalent
8 GB RAM
30 GB free HDD space
NVIDIA GTX 550 Ti 2GB/AMD Radeon HD 7870 2GB or equivalent

AMD Fx (tm)6120 6-core Processor 3.50 GHz
Installed Memory RAM 8.00 GB
64 bit Operating System, x64 based processor

Windows 10 Home

Is this sufficient if I get a new graphics card as your recommendation above?

I really appreciate this help. I have been looking forward to playing this game for so long! I absolutely wore out Fallout 3 and up to now that is my favorite game.

Thank you again for your help!

Someone else will have to advise you on your processor as I don't know much about AMDs.

If we can assume this is a desktop, we'd also have to know the wattage of your power supply which will most likely have to be upgraded if you have a better video card installed.

I'm always amazed at the manufacturers that advertise these "ultimate gaming machines" and then put a low end video card in it.

I happened to run across some benchmarks comparing your AMD CPU against a 4670 Core i5 and the AMD is ranked way below the Core i5.

http://cpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/AMD-FX-6120-Six-Core-vs-Intel-Core-i5-4670K/m7026vs1538

So even if you upgrade your video card, your CPU may still be a bottleneck for this game. But this is sort of out of my league, so I'll let Jenny or Inland try to help you out!

It would be better to compare Athleen's AMD with the requirements for AMD (AMD Phenom II X4 945) instead of to Core i5.
http://cpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/AMD-FX-6120-Six-Core-vs-AMD-Phenom-II-X4-945/m7026vsm101

Going by the benchmark site, Athleen's processor looks only a little better than the minimum requirement. However benchmarks are only an approximation of real world performance, and actual performance in a particular game could be either better or worse.

Compared to the AMD FX-9590 that is recommended for AMD processor, the FX-6120 looks like this
http://cpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/AMD-FX-6120-Six-Core-vs-AMD-FX-9590/m7026vs1812

Athleen,
you could probably get Fallout 4 playing acceptably if you got a good video card (the recommended or better, not the minimum) -- and assuming your computer is capable of accepting the new card -- a higher wattage power supply and extra case fans can be added if necessary, but if the case is too small or for some other reason is not upgradable, you won't be able to add the new card.

The big question is whether you are going to want to play similar games in the future, which would probably require a faster processor. There's not much point buying an expensive video card if your processor will be too slow for the games you want to play before next year. So is Fallout 4 a special game and the only action/RPG-type game you're going to want to play for the next 3 years or so? or are you going to want to play other action or RPG games that will undoubtedly have higher requirements? It's no fun playing on a sluggish computer, so it might be worth your while to get a new gaming-oriented computer if you are an action/RPG fan.

There you go, Atheen! Jenny's info is what you need...

And as a reference point to what Jenny said, I checked Newegg and the recommended video card for this game (Radeon R9 290X 4GB) costs roughly $300 - $350. And that's before you determine whether you need a power supply upgrade etc.

A new actual gaming computer might be a better option.

A lot to think about here! I have been playing F4 with the only issue the floating mouse cursor. Do the manufacturers think you buy a new PC with every new edition of a game? I guess what they think doesn't matter but I'm a bit bummed to think it might cost me hundreds of dollars to play an expensive game that I've already paid for! At least I know my options and I am so grateful for your help. I don't think I've ever NOT gotten good info and help from Gameboomers.

I just upgraded from Windows 8.2 to Windows 10 and am now completely unable to play this game. I am thinking about how to quit gaming altogether. Very discouraged and feeling manipulated by game makers.

Now I have more problems. I upgraded to Win 10 just last night and today I find that NONE of my games run well. There seems to be a 'rainbow' of bright colors around each object. Is there some was to correct this?

Thank you!

Game makers are giving customers the games they want with increasingly better graphics and demands on computers. Adventure gaming is no different. Some people have gone to console gaming to avoid having to make upgrades every time the new more and more demanding games come out. This is why it's SO important to read the system requirement specs to be sure your computer is capable of playing a new game before you buy it.

When you have a lower end computer like you do, it is inevitable that the newest games aren't going to play on it. When I last rebuilt my computer, I installed the best video card and CPU I could afford and it should work for me for a good long time yet. But the time will come when I will also need to upgrade if I want to continue playing new games on the PC.

Do you have the most current video drivers for your video card?

I'm no expert, but that would be my first thought.

I suspect you need to update your video card drivers as Marian said. Go to the manufacturer's website and download from there.

I'd say they're giving the customers who are willing to shell out gobs of money what those particular customers want.

Adventure games typically have lower requirements than RPG's and action games. They're not standing still, but you can usually get away with not purchasing a new computer as often if you stick to adventure and casual games. The video card will always be of prime importance and the video card is the first thing you should look at if you're trying to decide if a computer is a "gaming" computer or not.

Sounds like a downgrade to me.
You could shop around for new drivers, which may or may not work.
Or you could try to revert to your previous version of Windows.

http://www.howtogeek.com/220723/how-to-uninstall-windows-10-and-downgrade-to-windows-7-or-8.1/

A newer version of Windows won't ever make your computer's internal hardware any better than it is though. It's not going to make your video card or processor any faster.

Of course if you find a version of the drivers that works better than what you have, Windows 10 will promptly replace the working version with the version it thinks is best.

How-To-Geek has some suggestions for preventing that

I am also playing this on an under spec machine and I was getting the mouse lag (even after turning off Mouse Acceleration) and had to use the many .ini file tweaks you can find around the internet, like turning off godrays and shadows etc (try those), but the biggest boost to framerate and game smoothness (and so, mouse lag) for me was the Fallout 4 Texture Optimisation Project mod on Nexus. There are still a few places in FO4 that remain a bit sluggish and I would imagine will remain so till Bethesda start doing a few optimisation passes but this was a great help.

One very strange thing with FO4 is that indoor locations are a lot more sluggish than outdoors. Usually the opposite is the case as their is far less to render indoors and the view distances are a lot shorter.

You can also use this Configuration Tool if you dont want to mess with the .ini files directly

I need to update a bit. I got very frustrated with the help offered and didn't think I could manage it. So I just quit the game for several months. Yesterday I got frustrated again, but with myself, and did all of the things recommended to configure the game. Mostly it was to turn off Mouse Accelerator, turned off godrays and shadows and texture optimization. Now the game works! I owe you all a big thanks for that! Yea! It seems to be going well and my only problem now is that I can't seem to take off my avatar's power suit. Looked in Help, which didn't. She can't sleep or use the workbenches with a power suit on. I'm sure this is going to be something obvious, but I can't seem to find it. Help would be appreciated. Thank you all - Gameboomers are the best.
