The best kind is flavored seltzers or sparking water. Many do not have salt or sugar added and they are tasty.

This is a good graphic of how much sugar is in sodas and many soft drinks. The stuff in diet sodas is arguably even worse for you. Haven't had a soda or soft drink in 20 years... never did like them because they are just too sweet. There is some research out there to suggest the companies know how addictive sugar is.
