There was a "Trilogy" made to work on Windows 7.
http://www.lasthalfofdarkness.com/trilogy.htm
It appears to be a disc version.

The links for the individual games on the Last Half of Darkness website point to Steam
http://www.lasthalfofdarkness.com/products.htm

Even at Steam the games aren't listed as compatible with Windows 10, though whether that's because Steam hasn't updated its webpages since Windows 8 or not I don't know.

I have Last Half of Darkness Beyond the Spirit's Eye listed on the Windows 10 and Games thread as having issues. I also have Last Half of Darkness Pursuit of Loath Nolder, but I don't think I installed that from the disc... I'll have to check.

I wrote to the guy who made the games, he says they should run in Win 10 but might have to reinstall directx 9.c, microsoft won't let me install that for win 10.

According to this discussion, trying to install using XP SP3 compatibility mode might be the only thing that might work.

I would guess you'd do it the same way as for Windows 7 and 8 --

Download the full installer for DirectX 9.0c (the "redistributable" .exe file).

Then right-click the DirectX installer file, choose Properties, choose comptibility tab, set compatibility to XP, and OK the changes.

Then run the DirectX installer.

I don't know if it's true or not, but the link I posted says this:

Quote:
The DirectX built in to Windows 10 is compatible with DirectX 9, 10 and 11.
So you shouldn't try to install an older DirectX version manually at all. You can really screw up your Windows installation that way.

Unfortunately there are a lot of programs (mainly old games) that try to install DirectX by themselves or test for the presence of a certain DirectX version in an incorrect way, which causes them to miss that DirectX is already present.

There is really no good solution to that.
If the installer of the old program is braindead you can't really cure that.

I think they were talking about trying to install the game itself using XP SP3 compatibility mode. To do that, TLC, go to the game disk and use Explorer to find the setup or executable file. Right click it and select Properties and then click on the Compatibility tab. This might help...

Ok, I did that, then got an error when I tried to play, something about the screen size resolution.

I'm trying it from Steam. I'll let ya know how it goes.

You might changing your screen resolution down - I'm not sure what resolution the game needed. When you try to play, do you get to any of the in-game menus? Just wondering if you can change the resolution in the game.

If not, right click anywhere on your desktop and select Display Settings and then click on Advanced Display Settings. See if that helps.

But doing that, would I have to change it every time I close the game, to do other stuff?

I think this game plays in 640x480.
That may be too low a resolution to play full screen in Windows 10.

See if there's an option to play in 640x480 in the compatibility settings for the game's exe.

I figured it would - if you can find these games at Steam or GOG, you will be much better off aggravation-wise.

What about the Trilogy?
That certainly seemed to indicate a disc version.
(unlike the individual games, which clearly linked to Steam).

I bought the Trilogy at steam. Here's what William wrote in the email "I actually don't sell the disk version anymore (if you click on the Trilogy link it will direct you to Steam)"
