Mome, there is a different walkthrough here --hopefully it may clear up some of your confusion...

You have the gadget you found in the WELL??? When you walk thru the door of the ruined hut, go all the way to the very edge of the floor. Turn left, and come up on the large wooden frame. The spot in pretty low.

If you are at the right wooden framework, sometimes you can find the spot just by moving the item all around and watch for it to light up. I think this is another place where you have to come at it from the right side of your screen.

That's a tricky one, Mome. There are several things you have to do down there.
There is a room with some things you need, but you won't be able to pick one of them up until you make the room warmer. The idea is to open the doors so that the heat flows through to that room. When you get it right, Arthur will tell you he feels it has gotten warmer. Find the room, then trace a route on the map back to the main heat source.
While you are down there, you have to find Genghis Kahn's tent and "borrow" something.

HERE is a map (SPOILER) that might help with the tunnels. I believe it is correct. If you want further clarification of the symbols let me know.

Maybe I'll head that way if the next hurricane runs me out of town again. It's a long ways off but coming this way in general and is already a category 4. On the map I posted the symbols over the doorways are marked so as to help you keep track of where you are.

Billy Bob has the right idea, Mome, at each set of tunnel doors there is a symbol on the ceiling that is also on the MAP.... You can see where you are at each stop. The MAP also shows you which side of the split tunnels the door is rolled over, so you will see which way you CAN'T go, and move it if you need to.
Did you find all three of the other ways in and out of the tunnels (besides the one into Kahn's tent)?
And don't forget to talk to everyone using all your other dis.guises, you get diff info with each one.
EDIT: P. S. Did you find out that you can go back and forth to each Time to pick up things to help in the other ones????

Are you trying to oil the prayer wheel? You may need to get the bottle of olive oil from the vendor in Atlantis, although I think butter from the black Buddha in the tunnels might work as well there. I can't remember specifically which one I used.

LadyK is right, you can hop back & forth to all 3 time periods whenever you want to. You will always appear in the spot you jumped FROM, so when you do come back you will be right where you need to use what you went after. Going after the OIL is probably quicker than getting thru those tunnels again.

Yes, Mome, you should be able to go back and get the oil if it turns out that you don't have it....

Mome, there are so many things that need to be done that it's almost impossible for me to tell what you might have missed. Why not check out Soren A. walkthrough to see if you can find some detail that escaped you...

Mome, are you using the 'Bar' for Atlantis at the top of the screen??? Or are you using saved games to jump back and forth?
Sometimes you have to scan your inventory to find what you are looking for. The oil can be dipped with a funny looking rolled edge bowl,(like an upside-down crown) I used the pitcher for the 'Water of Life' in the Temple. The beggar's bowl is used for something else.
Did the bowl actually float down and dip the oil, then go into your inventory???

Maybe you should take a quick hop back to Atlantis and make sure the bowl collected the oil. Don't use more than one object on the oil. Save before you take the jump back to the Monastary.
Did you also get the 'Water of Life' from the Temple in the pitcher? Save each time you get something, and just do 'Return to Game', so you don't hit a wrong save by accident. If you save the oil, then right away do the Time Jump back, it should stay with you. In a pinch, you can get a bowl of butter from the Black Buddah's place in the tunnels. Of course you have to get him melted first. There is a bowl in that spot.

Mome, If you have already used the pitcher to hold the water for the tree in the greenhouse, then I doubt if you can use it again. Are you sure you have the correct bowl for the olive oil? It's not the beggar's bowl, as Granny said. Maybe you should just go back into the tunnels and melt some butter.

When you dip the oil, the bowl lights up, and goes all by itself into the tub, dips, and floats BY ITSELF into the inventory. You do NOT drag it. It sounds like you are using a bowl that already has something else in it. What is it shaped like?
The bowl & pitcher you get with the same grab from the shop are each used for something different.
What did you use to get the 'Water of Life'?????
