I can't get the severed head!.........I dimmed the lamp on the porch with the rag....I can't use that lamp or the one in my inventory to see into the well.....did I miss some matches for the lamp?.....any help here pls

Hi Paul,

After you covered the lantern with the rug, did you try to enter the door/house and hear them talking about the severed head in the well (this is the trigger). Then I think you can then take the lantern to the well. Also, hopefully you have the harpoon!

I had missed a second conversation with one hard-to-encounter character back tavern-way, which was preventing the police/conversation change at that door with the lantern. I was unable to progress until I got that 2nd conversation back tavern-way (it gave me a real reason to look in the well)...
