I have solved the third Coordinate Puzzle - and pressed the "Hand" and the island floated away - and I (Sam) have been up and down in the elevator and I am now totally lost - does anyone know what next ???

Glad to see you post!

You should go to the ramp just to one side of the elevator and see if you can meet an old man. You should get some oil using your pearls.

Those pearls are taken when Sam did the puzzle at the Balloon field when Sam made his first appearance. It is that Compass puzzle. You can go back there by backtracking to the balloon and fly or you can replay a saved game and redo most of what you have done.
