Sooner or later we all discover that the important moments of life are not the advertised ones, not the birthdays, the graduations, the weddings, the great goals achieved. The real milestones are less prepossessing. They come to the door of memory unannounced, stray dogs that amble in, sniff around a bit and simply never leave. Our lives are measured by these.

SUSAN B. ANTHONY

```````````````````````
A woman at my friend’s pet shop pointed to a Labrador puppy. "I want that one," she said. "But I don’t want the floor model."
```````````````````````

A shoe store customer liked a pair of Reeboks but wasn’t completely satisfied. So she stopped an associate and asked, "Does this come in a Nike?"

````````````````````````````
A patient at the dental office where I work stopped by my desk to pay her bill. She began rummaging through her purse, as so many patients do when they have a check to write. "Do you need a pen?" I asked, offering her mine.
"Yes, thank you," she replied. She took it, put it in her handbag, and proceeded to pay in cash.
``````````````````````````````

The City of Brotherly Lies

Tour guides get bored spewing the same facts everyday. So these Philadelphia guides rewrote history.

"Trees were planted along streets so illiterate people would know the names of the streets. So Pine Street was lined with pines, etc."

"The reason the kitchens were in the basement is because the long, flowing dresses of women would catch fire and they could run directly into the streets, instead of through the house, spreading fire."

"The Lincoln statue in Fairmont Park shows him signing the Declaration of Independence."

``````````````````````````````
A customer called our rental store to ask about rectangular tables. I told him we had six-foot and eight-foot tables. His response: "What’s the difference?"
````````````````````````````````

Our coworker Patrick shared his worst workday ever. He was at an appliance store and the delivery truck had broken down, which meant he was flooded with angry phone calls from customers. One irate caller canceled the delivery and told Patrick what he could do with it.

"I’m sorry," said Patrick. "That’s impossible. I already have a stove, a vacuum cleaner, and a microwave up there."

`````````````````
After browsing the restaurant menu, I had a question for the waitress. "About the salmon entrée, is that a steak or a fillet?" "Neither," she said. "It’s a fish."
``````````````````````````````

After a number of attempts to get the customer service agent on the phone to understand his name, my Asian American friend Appappa decided to spell it out.

"A for apple," he began. "P for pineapple, p for pineapple, a for apple, p for pineapple, p for—"

The flustered agent interrupted. "I have a better idea," she said. "Just tell me how many apples and how many pineapples."

````````````````````````
Standing in line at a restaurant, I noticed that the few available tables left had not been cleaned off. I mentioned this to the cashier, who told the manager. A minute later, an annoyed-looking teen emerged from the back with spray bottle and paper towels in hand.
"All right," she bellowed clear across the crowded dining room, "which one of you people wanted a clean table?"
`````````````````````````

My husband, who uses a wheelchair, showed up at his eye doctor’s for an appointment. The receptionist checked the schedule, then said, "The nurse will call you in a moment. Have a seat." He smiled. "Done."

`````````````````````````
A teller at our credit union was assisting a member with a loan application. "Do you have references?" she asked. The member replied, "Do they have to be living?"
``````````````````````````````

Think it’s easy being a tour guide? VisitBritain, a travel bureau, has compiled these tourist questions.

"Is Wales closed during the winter?"

"Why did they build Windsor Castle on the flight path of Heathrow?"

"Who feeds the Loch Ness monster?"

"Are there any Sheena Easton museums in Glasgow?"

`````````````````````````
At the clothing store where I work, I make it a point of pride to give customers my unvarnished opinion. One day, when a man emerged from the fitting room, I took one look at him and shook my head. "No, no," I said. "Those jeans look terrible on you. I’ll go get you another pair."
As I walked away, I heard him mumble, "I was trying on the shirt."
````````````````````````

It was a busy lunch hour, made longer by one of my customers who couldn’t make up his mind about what to order. After loudly polling everyone at his table, he asked me, "What do you think I should have?"

Before I could answer, an irritated man at the next table offered a suggestion: "How about a picnic?"

``````````````````````````
I took a real estate client to a handyman special. The place was great, and we couldn’t understand why it was so cheap, until we turned on the water main and water gushed from the ceiling. Dripping wet, my client put a positive spin on the showing: “Nice house,” he said. “It’s even self-cleaning.”
``````````````````

Good morning everyboomie. welcome

Wonderful Wednesday ya'll puppy

It's a wonderful cool day in AL. Will be taking the monkeys for a walk in a bit.

My day is programmed for studying and mad scientisting and dog walking...not necessarily in that order.

Joe, love that quote! Sorry you are still feeling icky!

Off to feed dogs! wavegirl

Rained last night while I slept. Darn, I wanted to watch it rain. Everything is sorta wet. Just enough to hit the ground but not enough to really soak anything. We need MORE rain. All of you who are hogging the rain...you know what to do.

My compactor 'part' is arriving with the postman today. I am anxious to see if THIS one does the trick. After the snafu with 2 different techs diagnosing it I'm crossing my fingers. First guy spent about 1 1/2 hours and told me it was the motor switch, but you can't buy a motor switch, you have to buy the entire motor. Yikes! Talk about great planning to gouge the consumer. So I declined the FOUR hundred estimate to fix (new compactor is about 6 hundred) and bought the motor/switch on ebay and my friend installed it. Turns out it WAS NOT the problem. So now I have 2 perfectly good working motors. I'm saving both just in case of future failure. THEN I called for a different tech to get a second opinion. This one almost ended up with the SAME guy coming back. They somehow 'canceled' my appointment and reschedule it for the following day with the SAME guy. I know he saw my appointment and figured he should be the one to fix whatever. Maybe he thought of the commission for the 400 job? Anyway, I straightened that one out with the scheduler and insisted that the first guy NOT come. So the new guy appears, the first words are something to the effect that I should have the FIRST guy back, not him and why did I think that a second guy would diagnose anything different? I immediately 'attacked' and told him that if that was the way this was going to go, he should just turn around and leave now. He got the message, let me explain why I needed a 'second opinion' and actually turned out to be a pretty good guy. Still, by the time he check everything out, it was ME (yes me) who figured out what the problem was. He agreed the motor and switch were working fine, but had no idea what was wrong. I suggested it might be a switch that reverses the 'ram' when it hits bottom. He checked that out (hadn't even looked at it till then). Bingo! The switch was reading an 'open' contact. So he then gave me an estimate for 300+ bucks. Again I declined since this was outrageous. Found the part on amazon.com. With the special 'offer' of 50 bucks off if I got one of their credit cards, I ended up paying only 40 bucks for what would have been 90 and now I will install the switch MYSELF today. It's incredibly easy. Unscrew 2 screws, pull out the switch, transfer 3 wires to the new switch, rescrew that one into place and push the button. Praying it works now. If not, I'm through with the fixing. I can still run the thing manually, just have to stand there while it goes down and reverse it myself with the start key. Annoying but it works. IF this new switch works, I'm going into the business of repairing Trash Compactors myself. Hardly anything in there and it's a simple test to see if things aren't working. WHY do the repair guys charge SO MUCH>????????

Off to tie down a cable by my bedroom window (camera) that was hitting the window during high winds last night. Annoying and scary. Easy fix.

Got the trash compactor part. Switched it out with the old one that the tech said was defective. Guess what? NOTHING has changed. Compactor still making that rrr rrr rrr noise at the bottom of the pack cycle. My conclusion is that neither tech knew a darned thing about compactors, that both of them just took whatever part they could convince me was the culprit and charge the highest price listed in their 'book', and that I promise I will never again use that company for any service calls on any appliances or electrical issues. That means that my local Sears, who I always buy compactors and stoves from, will not be the place I call for service since they use ONLY this outside contracted company to do the service work. Too bad, I like Sears.

Despite spending almost 200 bucks on 'trying' to fix the compactor, I can still use it manually and I will wait till it fails completely before getting a new one. Lesson learned. From now on, I'm going with a local, individual handyman type (with credentials) and not with anyone who has a book list of what to charge (in order of cost). Ditto for plumbing services who I have dealt with who have a book which I just happened to notice has THREE sections. Three different prices, according to what they think they can get out of you. Now I mention that I KNOW they have the 'business' price (for my rentals) and I get the lowest price every time. Is this dishonest business practice or just the way everyone prices repairs? Not really a fun lesson, but I'm learning more each time I have someone here to fix something. Very annoying.

Other than that, it's still a lovely day here and the Peacock is chasing the feral cats around the deck. I gave her some wet cat food and that satisfied her. She's not chasing them anymore. SHE has ME trained.

Hello everybody. wave2

Thanks to everyone for wishing me well. It worked. yes

I still have major sinus, and a bad cough, but I do feel much better than I did this morning when I left. bravo

We lost power this morning, and I had to get ready in the dark.....almost. It was cloudy and rainy all day. We just didn't get that much rain.

I came home after work, and took the dogs to the park and back. Then I fixed my dinner.

The sun is coming out now for the first time today. yay

It's kinda late already, so I'd better go get my shower out of the way. yes

I shall return.

joe

Hi Boomies. Connie thanks again for my fav breakfast I ate it for supper. I'm here to ask for some prayers and good thoughts to help when I have my surgery done on Friday morning. My plastic surgeon is going to repair what didn't graft from the surgery I had in November. I'm having butterflies, more like vultures. I'll be OK once I get to the hospital.
