Good morning everyboomie. welcome

I am running a little behind this evening, which is ridiculous considering my day. blush

I never even left the house. Not even to go out and get the mail. rolleyes

I woke up to an 80% chance of rain, which I wasn't expecting, and it did rain. Not much, and not very hard, but it was cool and rainy all day. frown

Instead of going out to the creek and having fun, I opted for staying in and testing the comfort level of my couch, and cleaning out the fridge. slapforehead

Now I have to go buy more groceries tomorrow after work, and then come home and try to figure out why I'm gaining weight. headscratch

Highlight of my Thursday? I get to go to work. shocked

I know.....go figure. crazy

Have a happy day everyone.

I'm hoping to take it easy today. Yesterday afternoon, I spent most of it taking apart my trash compactor (again). After 2 technicians and 3 new parts who I found replaced WORKING parts, and 2 tech who were nice but annoyed me that they knew practically nothing about compactors, I was using my compactor 'manually'. It would go down, compress the trash but stay down and make a horrible grinding noise. It was doing that from the beginning when I first called for service.

So yesterday, it JAMMED in down position, making it useless even as a regular trash can. So I listened to the 'noise' that it had been making all along, and pinned it down to the very bottom area. I knew it wasn't the motor. Heard that, saw that work, even replaced it with a new one (the tech said it was bad) and still the same. So it reminded me of a sort of 'growl'. I managed to take apart the bottom panel (easy except for that the compactor weighs about 200 lbs. Then I run it and see that the huge, nylon gear that the motor engages with, is WOBBLY! It's barely contacting the motor gear and then jamming. The noise was two nylon gears slipping against each other. So I take that off (also very easy) and find that it's cracked around the collar where it should be on it's pivot point. Geez! All this time and the gear is running crooked and slipping.

I tried various ways to 'fix' it, but nothing will work so I ordered a new one. Actually I ordered a 'repair' kit containing all the nylon parts under there, most of which I don't need, except....when I took off the retaining clip it flew across the kitchen and was swallowed up by whatever monster eats all the other small items I drop on the floor. Can't find it anywhere. Probably slid under the stove or fridge but I'm not moving them to find out. So the 'kit' comes with a new retaining clip. Wheeeee.

In a week, I should have this fixed and maybe, just maybe, it will work and the growling sound will be no more and I will write a nice note to the repair company telling them what was wrong, so if they ever see/hear this problem again on another compactor, they will KNOW something. So dumb. Why didn't they recognize that noise, even when I pointed it out several times? They can't be that dumb to not know what it was since they said they were skilled at fixing compactors. The website for the repair company has a nice list of common repairs on compactors and the percentage of occurrence. This one was high on the list. I guess they lied. Hate that. If you don't know how to do what you are called to do, just say so. I asked right up front and they both assured me they were experts. I'm learning more and more about that company's repairmen.

Actually, the first guy DID mention about the nylon gears going bad since they are prone to cracking. BUT did he even open the bottom of the compactor to LOOK at the gears? Nope. I'm suspecting he knew what was might be wrong but didn't mention it, hoping for a more expensive repair. His first estimate was 400 bucks. The second guy, found another problem for 300 bucks. I didn't have either of those repairs done, but did them myself with the help of my neighbor. The parts we replaced were FINE. So now I have extras. Something shifty about a lot of the repairmen I've had here over the past 37 years. Found a few who really knew their jobs, and most who didn't.

From now on, I'm going with the independent guys, who don't work for a big company who gives them incentives for upping the charges on repairs. If they have a huge binder full of printed prices for every little thing, I'm not going to deal with them. Then again, I know so much now about the workings of a lot of things now from watching them work(plumbing, electrical, appliances) that before long, I will be able to do it all myself. rotfl
