I dug out my old W98 and was prepared to play Amber and it said it appears "IT IS NOT MOUNTED". I am confused because I remember playing it Years ago directly from the cd and there was no mounting involved. Has anyone else experienced this? I have not used DOS in years so I don't know where to start. Could someone tell me how to get it installed and running using DOS?

Are you trying to play it in DOS or Windows.

Amber is not a DOS game.

If you are trying to play it in Windows, then it sounds like you may have tried to use a CD emulation program like Daemon-Tools or Virtual CD at some time in the past, and that there is confusion between the virtual CD drive and the physical drive letters.

The following doesn't matter for Amber, since it is not a DOS game, but DOS doesn't automatically detect your CD. You need to configure MSCDEX in autoexec.bat and add a line for the DOS CD driver in config.sys.

If you check http://www.gameboomers.com/Members/DOS.htm
and highlight the line for
My CD/DVD drive isn't recognized in DOS
you can see an example.

Thank you so much for that link. My old W98 IS NOT internet connected so therefor I could not download the utilities I might need. No problem I can always watch it on youtube. It is just strange that I am getting this DOS reading when in fact the game is not a DOS game.

MSCDEX.exe comes with Windows 98 and the DOS CD driver oakcdrom.sys also comes with Windows 98.

I think they are in
C:\Windows\Command\MSCDEX.exe
C:\Windows\Command\ebd\Oakcdrom.sys

You'd also need to configure your sound card for sound in DOS if you want to play in DOS mode. If you have an ISA soundblaster card and driver CD, the driver CD will do the necessary installation and configuration.

As I said before, if you're getting a message about "mounting" a CD, it sounds like you had Daemon-Tools or Virtual CD or some other CD emulation program installed at some point. Do you remember installing anything like that? If you do have something like that, then you'd need to make an iso file out of the Amber CD and then mount the CD using the CD emulation program. Or check your drive letters in Device Manager and see if there's something other than the physical drive listed.

Jenny,

Thanks you so much for all of your help. I had so many games back when I purchased this game many years ago. I played a little of some of them and others like Amber I quit w/o finishing and went to the next one. I wish I had finished it when I had the old W95 on which I started .t. I finally threw out the old W95 but for some reason held on to this windows98 machine. I am sure I will figure it out and I will get back to you with my success story.

Try uninstalling it, then reinstalling it from the drive you intend to run it from.
It uses an old version of QuickTime (QuickTime 2.12 I think).
You may already have that installed on your Windows 98 computer.

If all you are trying to do is play the game, why not just just the new installer.

From that webpage...

Common problems

Crash after a few minutes underwater (gameplay): This is a known problem and is on the TODO list to investigate.

Unable to enter password (gameplay): This is a known problem and is on the TODO list to investigate.

There is a saved game to get past the password problem here

But it's not like being able to complete the game yourself.
I'd rather use an older computer or virtual machine myself.

Unfortunately jafa has not been around to work on his installers and he never released his source for anyone else to pick up where he left off. I would note that not everyone encounters that problem. It looks like it may be a version related issue.
