Hi.

I just purchased the CD version of an old HOG called Shutter Island but it won't play unless I install "Flash Player 10 Active X" duh

Is this a dangerous thing to have ?? Because Norton removes it instantly if I try to install it eek

Thanks for any advice.

Cheers.

Flash Player 10 is an old version.
The current version for Windows seems to be 21
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adobe_Flash_Player

Do you have any version of Flash installed at all?
Does the game not work with the current version of Flash?

Sorry to be so long getting back here, Jenny100 yes

Flash Player 10 is the version supplied on the game disk. This game is from 2010 and Vista7 or WinXP are listed as system requirements.
[I've now tried installing it to both WinXP and Win7 but got the same results.]

Do you have any version of Flash installed at all?
Does the game not work with the current version of Flash?

Flash Player is not listed under "Programmes" on any of the drives on either my WinXP machine OR my Win7 machine and although there are several folders and files on my WinXP machine with Flash Player in the title, there doesn't seem to be anything actually installed.
And I'm not "allowed" to install anything.

I very rarely go on line from WinXP but if I do, I use Firefox. So I checked the Add-Ons in Firefox and no Flash "anything" is listed there, either.

Firefox started blocking Flash player last year. They may have relented for a while, but I think it's blocked again. Here is a list of Add-Ons that Firefox blocks.
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/blocked/

I'm not sure if Flash will work if you use IE. It might depend on what version you have.

Don't try to install an old version of Flash Player on your main Windows. If the latest version of Flash won't install through your browser, see if you can download the executable for the latest version directly from Adobe.

You might have to add the exe to your antivirus's "exceptions" list.

This problem with Flash may be why the game was removed by Big Fish.

I'm not sure, but the only way to play this game now might be inside a virtual machine with a non-updated version of Windows installed. Then the game will be able to use the old version of Flash that it shipped with.

Lots of web browsers and security software seem to be blocking Flash because there are so many zero day flaws in Flash -- new ones discovered every day -- which means they can't be detected by an antivirus. Considering the seriousness of ransomware, there is reason for doing this.

On my computer I see Flash was available in Firefox version 44.0.2 but not in Firefox version 45.0.2, so I think blocking Flash may be a new "feature."

Thanks for all that, Jenny100, you are so kind !! thumbsup

I'll have a think about what lengths I'm prepared to go to in order to play this game.

It actually only cost a pittance so if I can't get it to run without jumping through loads of hoops, I might just forget about it altogether yes

I don't know if this information is still relevant, but here are troubleshooting suggestions from Adobe:

I have as many problems in IE with Flash as I do in Firefox... Although I've not warmed up to Edge at all, it's it only browser that doesn't have Flash problems. Not sure about Chrome as I don't use it.

I have been reading these post, so I checked my computer and Shockwave Flash Object V.21.0.0.241 is in my IE add-ons. It was installed May 2, 2016. I did not install it, so a game must have added it to add-ons. Should I disable this add-on? As for Shutter Island, I just installed it and it played. I have Windows 10, could it be because I have Shockwave Flash Object?

At least it is a recent version.
It looks like the latest version is 21.0.0.242

Apparently your Shutter Island game will work with a recent version of Flash. Is your install from a disc the way Mad's is? Or is it a download?

If you want to play the game, you may be able to leave Flash installed on your hard drive but disable it in your browser. You'll have to experiment. Considering the security problems with Flash, I wouldn't even leave it installed on the hard drive unless I had a good use for it. Just uninstall the Flash when you're done with playing the game.

Shutter Island needs Flash.
Mad couldn't install the version of Flash that shipped with her game disc. However she uses Norton, which may be blocking the installation of all versions of Flash, even the latest one.

I have Windows 7 Home, Norton Anti Virus, Internet Explorer 7, the latest version of Flash, and the Shutter Island disc. I've never played the game but just opened it up, installed it, and played for about 20 minutes with no problem.

Thanks for telling us that, oldbroad. I might get this game running yet !! lol

I'll try downloading the latest Flash - using IE - and I'll come back and let you know what happens whistle

EDIT :

This is really strange rolleyes

I downloaded and saved the set-up files for the latest version of Flash Player to My Win7 (Enterprise) machine - using IE - and then went to my "Downloads" folder and activated the saved Flash files .... and Norton didn't object at all woozy

After that I did a search to see where Flash was on my computer because I couldn't find it - but nothing came up. And no Add-On was showing for it in IE !!
What the heck ????

But I thought I'd try installing the game anyway - and - it installed without any problem at all - AND - it launched on request - AND - right away I could "interact" in the first available scene shocked

So, I don't have to abandom this game after all !!!! bravo

Thank you SO much Jenny100 and oldbroad for your fantastic help hamster hamster hamster

Glad you got it running Mad!

It's a very simplistic format - just a series of hidden object scenes yes

After succesfully finding the items "required" in any particular scene, dialogue, accompanied by "stills" of the protagonists, provides another piece of the story and then you are moved to the next hidden object scene.

Needless to say I'm definitely expecting a LOT of good story in the dialogue bits but so far haven't done too badly at all in that respect so I'm actually quite enjoying the game snicker

Jenny100, I installed Shutter Island from the disc. I disabled Shockwave Flash Object from the browser. Is Shockwave the same as Adobe Flash Player? Neither item shows up in my Programs and Features list, so I can not uninstall it. When I checked the add-ons today the file date is May 11, 2016, not May 2,2016 like it read before. Is the file date even important? I am confused, but I usually am when it comes to computers.

Kazzmo,
Maybe this forum thread will help answer your questions
https://forums.adobe.com/thread/1595994

It seems that in Windows 8 and later Flash is integrated into IE and won't show up in Programs and Features.

The file date may indicate you have the latest Flash version.
If you check
https://helpx.adobe.com/flash-player/kb/archived-flash-player-versions.html
you can see there was an update on May 12, 2016

If you want an uninstaller, there is one here
https://helpx.adobe.com/flash-player/kb/uninstall-flash-player-windows.html

However they say it isn't for the Flash that is integrated into IE.
