Can anyone help? I opened my laptop this am and found a Windows 10 screen ready to download. I do NOT want Win 10!!! so I went to programs. uninstalled win 10 and now all of my documents will no longer open. (Including my Walkthrough documents for games as well as all the other documents) My system is Windows 7 and I do not want 10. I Googled and looked for solutions and they all have to do with problems after installing 10. I UNINSTALLED and apparently did it the wrong way.( Guess I was suppose to type in a number) I went to control panel. Programs. Found Win 10 and clicked uninstall. which it did, and took the ability to open my word docs. Now I don't even find Word in the start up menu so I can't write any new documents/replace my walkthroughs... I have been reading about restoring and am afraid to make another mistake! Should I try to restore system and if so - best way? I have Windows 7.
Thank you so much for advice!

Oh, dear... you didn't need to uninstall Windows 10 as it had not installed. Your screen said it was ready to download - that's all. What you needed to do was cancel the download.

I don't know what you did to cause documents to not be available. But I would strongly suggest a system restore. There is a thread here in the Glitches forum with some suggestions about how to avoid the Windows 10 upgrade.

http://www.gameboomers.com/forum/ubbthreads.php/topics/1066848/Windows_10_Mandatory?#Post1066848

Should Windows 10 somehow become downloaded and installed - a process which takes some time - you do not UNINSTALL. You have 30 days to revert back to Windows 7 if you choose.

And you do it through Update & Security, not Control Panel\Programs.

Do you have a restore point?

Thank you for your information. Windows had actually started to install a few days ago after persistent reminders it was available, (whether I bumped a key by mistake or ?) and because there was no option to get out of it I restarted the laptop, then it was "gone". Then today, the screen showed the "ready to install" screen. That is when I went to programs and saw Windows 10 as one of the programs in the list, and right clicked to uninstall.
I will take a look at the link to restore. The problem with Windows 10 "moving in" is although I run Windows 7 just fine, someone told me that my (older) laptop would not handle Windows 10. So if by restoring, 10 does install, I may find my laptop with other issues...or if - with any luck only the same "ready to install" appears maybe I can follow the correct instructions and take it off the right way.
Thank you very much for your help. I am going now to see the restore link.
I do not think I have a restore point...how do I find out? If it is a manual thing to do, then I have never set one up...
also, if any of the instructions say to go to "file", as in a Word document, I can't open any of the documents to access that.
The other thing maybe worth mentioning is that the word doc icons are still there on the desk top and the error message says that the file may be damaged or unsupported.
Sorry if I have not explained very well...

No one posted a link about how to use System Restore.
But if you don't know how to do it, there are instructions here
http://www.wikihow.com/Use-System-Restore-on-Windows-7

I posted two links about how to undo a Windows 10 installation, which has nothing to do with System Restore in Windows 7. The links are for how to get back to Windows 7 if Windows 10 has already managed to install.

If you want to prevent Windows 10 from installing, use this utility
https://www.grc.com/never10.htm
Click the green "Download Now" button on that webpage to download Never10.
Then right-click Never10 and run it as an administrator.

In your first post, you said it was ready to download...
Quote:
I opened my laptop this am and found a Windows 10 screen ready to download.
So, sorry I gave you wrong information!

At this point - especially if you don't have any restore points - I would let Windows 10 install itself. It would be much easier to simply revert back to Windows 7 as long as you do it within 30 days.

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-10/going-back-to-windows-7-or-windows-81

Then use Jenny's link to stop this upgrade permanently. I also posted a link to the post where this was discussed.

Good luck!

THANK YOU! There is hope!
If I have to, a last option I suppose is to reinstall Windows 7 and not worry about what I can't open/might loose. I appreciate your help because I know that if a person starts guessing what options to choose (not a computer whiz) there could be even more problems!
I will spend some time looking at the links (thanks!)to resolve the problem.
Thanks again!

Let us know how it goes! If you don't have any restore points, then letting Windows 10 install and reverting back to Windows 7 should leave all your files intact.

I still don't understand how you lost Word if you were able to stop Windows 10 from installing before it actually did anything. Is Word still listed in Programs? (what used to be called Add/Remove Programs in XP)? Did Word come with the laptop?

Is everything else working OK or are there other programs that don't use Word that also aren't working.

Thanks for not giving up on my problem... I typed in the wrong information. duh. MICROSOFT got wiped out during the uninstall of Windows 10. My mistake. Sorry.
Microsoft is no longer in the start up menu, nor is it in the task bar, and can not be found in a "search", so none of the documents are supported, and what I have left on the desk top are white icons/ghosts of my documents.
I don't understand this either, why did Microsoft Office/Word disappear when the only item uninstalled was Windows 10?
I installed Microsoft myself. I think I can use it again although some programs are a one time install...
also, everything else I use seems to be ok. So it is just that Microsoft is gone. So far.
The other thing to add is that Windows 10 had actually started to install (I did not tell it to - and there was no way to close it, cancel it - so I rebooted and saw that is was "gone". Not so because the next time I turned on the laptop, there it was again "installation interrupted". It was also already in the list of installed programs.
Have not tried to restore yet. Still trying to figure out if 10 is too much for my older laptop.

As Jenny100 mentioned:

If so, it might be a trial version and Win10 might have wiped that out, if it is a purchased version on a DVD or On-line, then I would just re-install your Word and it should fix your problem of not being able to open your Doc files and your walkthroughs.

You say Microsoft got wiped out... Microsoft what?

Oh, wait - just re-read your post. Do you mean Microsoft Office got wiped out or uninstalled? You could NOT have uninstalled Windows 10 since it has never been INSTALLED. Besides you cannot uninstall an operating system.

Are you sure you didn't see Office 2010 or something like that and uninstall it instead?

I'm sort of confused here - not a long trip most days!

Do you have your disk for Microsoft Office? If so, you should be able to reinstall it.

I hope it was the MS Office Word that got wiped out and like you Draclvr, not the OS. Confused? Me, I am getting there...

The Windows 10 OS couldn't have been UNinstalled since it was never INstalled.

Thanks, yes Microsoft Office is no longer in the start menu, the Word icon is gone from the task bar. ( I originally bought it and installed this program.)

Windows 10 had started it's install - when I discovered it and stopped it (by force quit)
I agree, you can't uninstall something that hasn't been installed.
However, Windows 10 was in the list of programs that are installed under "Programs and Features" in my system.
Because it was there, I assumed the install had taken hold - if not completed. That is when I should have looked for the long number associated with Win 10 and gone that route. Too late.
No mistake about what I selected to "uninstall" though. It was clearly listed as a Windows 10 program in the Control Panel and in Programs and Features. I could not have, and did not mistakenly select the Microsoft program.
So sorry for any confusion.

This is the most bizarre thing I've ever heard of! Windows 10 is not a program or feature - it is an operating system - so finding it listed there is utterly bizarre. You can't uninstall an operating system either, so that makes it doubly bizarre for it to be listed there! You definitely had some strange things going on with your computer.

I have a feeling your problems started when you did the hard shut down/force quit during the installation. If the installation had started and you did that, I'm surprised you didn't completely hose the system. Maybe you caught it before it actually started.

However, it does sure sound like you uninstalled your Microsoft Office though. Do you have the disks? If so, just reinstall it.

Do make sure you follow Jenny's link to make sure this doesn't happen again though. And if for some reason the Windows 10 install starts again, just let it finish. You can use the link I provided to roll it back to Windows 7.

It does sound like you uninstalled Microsoft Office 2010.
Are you able to reinstall it from a disc?

If it actually said "Windows 10" or "Microsoft Windows 10" in your (Add/Remove) Programs, it sounds like you have a serious registry problem with things being renamed to something else. I haven't been able to find any other instances where Windows 10 showed up in anyone's (Add/Remove) Programs.

It's unlikely you got rid of the Windows 10 installation files because Microsoft puts them in a hidden folder. The stinking thing will probably try again in the future unless you do something to stop it.

Be sure to install Never10 so nothing like this happens again.
You can download it directly from
https://www.grc.com/files/never10.exe

but you may want to look at the download page at
https://www.grc.com/never10.htm
because it has information and pictures of what you'll see when you run it. Not only will Never10 make Windows 10 back off, it will get rid of the hidden Windows 10 folder.

Thank you to everyone helping with this Windows 10 issue.
I decided to restore the system. I read how doing that could affect some programs/may have to reinstall some - etc.
So I am back to a few days before the problem started.
Microsoft is back in the Start Menu.
Guess what is also back....yup. Windows 10 sending a screen now saying "...nearly ready..."
In this screen there IS a close box. That was not there previously. So I closed it.
The restore method is painless though I will say I was afraid to use it and make things worse. So far I do not notice any changes to my programs and my Word Docs are back to their normal state. No picture files were affected. So far it's all good.
So. Now I will look again at your links to properly rid my computer of this problem.
THANK YOU so much for recommending the links to go to!
Hopefully the next time I log in it will be for something fun!
Sure do appreciate you all!

Just tried that.
Microsoft does NOT work at all. It is in the start up menu but useless.
So, the Word documents will not open, nor will the Word program open.
Sadly, Microsoft will not restore individually either. Just get error messages.
I will look for my Microsoft disc and try a new install. HOWEVER...
Since several Microsoft items are listed in the start up menu, and in the Programs and Features in Control Panel, do I get rid of all old Microsoft items before the new install? or wait. or not worry about them?
Now I wonder what else was affected by the restore?

What do you mean by Microsoft? I think this is part of what confused me - you kept referring to "Microsoft." Do you mean Microsoft Office? I would ignore everything in Control Panel, find that disk and reinstall Office. If nothing else, it will do a repair install.
