WILLIAM LYON PHELPS

This is the first test of a gentleman: his respect for those who can be of no possible value to him.

`````````````````````````
As a dentist, I recently tried out a new chocolate-flavored pumice paste on my patients. No one liked it except for a six-year-old boy. While I polished his teeth, he continued to smile and lick his lips. "You must really like this new flavor," I said.
"Yep," he replied, nodding with satisfaction. "It tastes just like the time I dropped my candy bar in the sandbox."
```````````````````````````````````

The commercial for Viagra with the middle-aged men running happily through the streets to the song "We Are the Champions" came on while my husband and ten-year-old son were watching TV. After seeing these jubilant men kicking up their heels, my son turned to his father and said, "Dad, would you be that happy if you got rid of your heartburn?"

`````````````````````````
Preparing my son for his first day of kindergarten, we were reviewing numbers and counting. Suddenly he asked, "What is the biggest number in the world?"
As briefly as possible, I tried to explain the concept of infinity. I thought I had done pretty well, but then he said, "Dad, what number comes just before infinity?"
``````````````````````````````

During weekly visits to my allergist, I’ve noticed a lot of inattentive parents with ill-behaved children in the waiting room. So I was impressed one day to see a mother with her little boy, helping him sound out the words on a sign.

Finally he mastered it and his mother cheered, "That’s great! Now sit there. I’ll be back in 15 minutes."

What did the sign say? "Children must not be left unattended."

```````````````````````````
As a professor at Texas A&M, I taught during the day and did research at night. I would usually take a break around nine, however, calling up the strategy game Warcraft on the Internet and playing with an online team.
One night I was paired with a veteran of the game who was a master strategist. With him at the helm, our troops crushed opponent after opponent, and after six games we were undefeated. Suddenly, my fearless leader informed me his mom wanted him to go to bed.
"How old are you?" I typed.
"Twelve," he replied. "How old are you?"
Feeling my face redden, I answered, "Eight."
```````````````````````````

After years of using the same perfumes, I decided to try something different and settled on a light, citrusy fragrance. The next day I was surprised when it was my little boy, not my husband, who first noticed the change. As he put his arms around me, he declared, "Wow, Mom, you smell just like Froot Loops!"

``````````````````````````````
My older son loves school, but his younger brother absolutely hates it. One weekend he cried and fretted and tried every excuse not to go back on Monday. Sunday morning on the way home from church, the crying and whining built to a crescendo. At the end of my rope, I finally stopped the car and explained, "Honey, it’s a law. If you don’t go to school, they’ll put Mommy in jail."
He looked at me, thought a moment, then asked, "How long would you have to stay?"
````````````````````````

My son, age 13, was sick in bed with bronchitis, and although he showed some general improvement, his harsh cough persisted and could be heard all over the house. Worried, too, that he was missing so much school, I went into his room to see how he felt.

There he was, propped up in bed, earphones on, listening to a baseball game—while the tape recorder coughed on and on. The next morning he was in school.

````````````````````````
Nothing seems to dim my 13-year-old son’s sense of humor. And he’s certainly not above being the butt of his own joke. Shortly after he was diagnosed with attention deficit disorder (ADD), he threw this at me: "Hey Dad—how many ADD children does it take to change a light bulb?"
"I give up," I said.
"Let’s go ride our bikes."
``````````````````````

I overheard my nine-year-old son on the phone with a friend discussing a computer simulation game. The game involved creating a family, a house for them to live in, and so on. My son, an old hand at the game, gave this warning: "Whatever you do, don’t get kids. They don’t bring in any money, and all they do is eat."

````````````````````````````
Good morning all. I'm in the middle of sprucing up my apartment. There's a representative from a company that's thinking of investing in Pembroke Woods. I don't know what that means. I certainly don't want my rent to go up. scared
Oh oh! Midgie, if the management has notified everyone to 'clean up' because someone is coming to 'look', I'm betting your happy home is up for sale or at least a partnership. It doesn't always mean a rent increase, but it's a good sign of it. Then again, you might get some 'upgrades' with a new ownership that will make your place better. If you have a lease, your rent can't go up until the lease expires no matter what. I panicked when the rental house I was in was going to be sold. I'd been here for 20 years at that point! The only thing they can do is let you stay at the current lease rent or do a 'buy-out' and pay everyone to leave. Then they rehab everything and usually invite some of the 'good ones' back in. Good luck with the 'company representative'. Hoping and praying that nothing changes unless it's GOOD.
Yesterday, I managed to spy little Lazarus the kitten out in the open (sort of). He was sitting on the cement surround that goes under my house. Mom is keeping him under the house now or right outside where there are nice bushes. Mom was eating way at the back of the house so I walked up and got Lazarus by the scruff of his neck and things were just fine until I snuggledhim to my chest. Oh oh oh! He dug in his claws (thank goodness for a heavy sweatshirt) and looked up at me (only inches from my face) and hissed and I swear he roared like one of those dinosaurs in Jurassic Park. Wow. Scared me. A tiny little guy with good defense tactics. I grabbed his neck again and he immediately settled down. Put him back so mom wouldn't catch me interfering with her kiddo. Hope he makes it. Tiny, white with some black spots and oh so visible to all the raptors around. It will be a miracle if he manages to grow up.
OH and the tiny other kitty who was across the street late at night, then in the bushes up my driveway (actually on my neighbor's side) the next day, was not there yesterday. I'm guessing MOM was moving a little from across the street OR from here to there, and he got left for the day. She probably came and retrieved him. No meows to be heard and nobody at the fresh food I put out for half of yesterday. Good. Don't need another stray right now.
CAMPER!Due to the horrendous number of camper vehicles and motor homes and converted busses and boats on trailers and people living in their cars all over our city, they finally voted in and started a new law. NO campers, trucks, busses, recreational vehicles or 'car living' vehicles ANY where in our city limits UNLESS they buy a PERMIT good for 3 nights max at about 3 bucks a night. They must have the permit AND must be parked within the SAME BLOCK as their residence as listed on the registration. Wow. This solved a major problem 2 blocks away on a street that was pretty wide and had fences all along (industrial area sort of) where there usually were at least 20-30+ vehicles parked forever. The law started on May 1. They gave out warnings to all vehicles and then gave them 2 weeks of moving time. They ticketed the first motorhome 2 weeks later because he still didn't think they would do that. The initial fine is 100 bucks! It goes up from there. They can buy those permits for 72 days of the year and no more. Soooo now, the regular parked camper across the street, which comes for a month, leaves for 1-2 weeks and then comes back for a month, just arrived last night. I know he's from out of town and works for the cement guy up the block, BUT I seriously doubt his registration is for that address, or that he has a permit. It's going to be fun to see if the police actually tag the camper in the next few days and if it moves out quickly. I think our city has started a snowball effect with all the cities around us. We aren't the first, but now another city is thinking about doing the same. Gonna be really fun when all the 'campers' have to go elsewhere or actually pay to park and only in THEIR own block. here are loads of RV parks around and most of the homes in my area have huge open lots where they could park if they wanted with no problems. Watching that camper today. It's my job. OH and it's parked right in front of the old guy's house that was sold recently and is being rehabbed by a flipper company. They usually have 5-7 vehicles (trucks and bigger trucks) parked there. The camper is taking up 3 parking spots. Maybe they will call it in. If it parks in front of my house, I'd do it, but it's just fun to watch what happens.
Home after a very busy day at work. The people spent about 5 minutes looking at my apartment, one of them remarked that it was a lovely apartment, that made me feel good. I cleaned and tidied it up so it looked nice and neat. I don't think that them coming here meant anything. this was an annual investment group just sizing up the whole Pembroke Woods complex.
I spent about an hour at my son and DIL's home. It is her b'day today. birthday Jen They've got a beautiful home that has something going on, on a daily basis. They have a black Lab that just sprawls out in front of me when I walk in the door. What a Love. I have to stroke her belly after she turns inside out, belly up. It's really comical. I get my doggies fix for sure while I'm there. L4L I think you'd love her immediately. She's so sweet.
Time to look for my pillow. Sweet dreams all.
Midgie signing off. smile wavegirl
