I just had my internet go down but I don't know if it was my service provider or something with my equipment. I tried the troubleshooter and it said:

The connection between your access point, router, or cable modem and the internet is broken. The network gateway is accessible but Windows couldn't receive network traffic from the internet.

Actually, before it showed that message it suggested I unplug my Linksey for a minute and after doing that is when the above message showed up. So I also unplugged my modem for a while. It was really, really hot. Is that normal for it go get so hot on the bottom?

After plugging the modem back in, my internet works again, but I don't know if that was the problem or just coincidence.

Most electronics components will run warm but never "really hot" as you describe. Make sure there is air flow in and around the unit. Engineers design things so they don't get "really hot" and it is NOT normal. It could also be potentially dangerous as in a fire hazard. It sounds like it may have been caught in a loop which got reset when you unplugged it.

Thanks Geo. I will keep an eye on it. I have the modem sitting on top of the Linksey. Don't really know where else to put it. It has to sit on something so no air flow to the bottom of it which is where it was hot.

You can try using a thick towel or something like that under it.

OK but that sounds dangerous to me if it is getting that hot and still no air flow.?

As Geo said, I would keep an eye on it, if as you say it becomes really hot I would be a bit nervous, mind you, it is normal that a modem becomes hot depending on the model you have, some tend to become hot after awhile.

You didn't mention if your Modem was part of a rental with your Provider, if so, I would call them and tell them you want a replacement.

In the meantime, if you have a metal tray or metal in-basket you could use that, put the tray upside down on the the Linksey and then your modem on top, the reason I prefer a metal wired tray is that they allow a lot of air to circulate around the machines, I provided a link below as an example of a tray that can be used for that purpose, there are better looking trays out there and a bit smaller, heck, you might have one lying around the house.:

Good luck

I use this for my modem, external HD, and router.Takes up a small footprint and allows a lot of airflow.

Thanks for the ideas for the airflow problem Starcom and Geo. I probably do have something around the house that would work. And Starcom, the modem is from my provider plus I think I have an extra one already if I need it.

Your welcome oldbroad,

The link that Geo sent is almost exactly what I have and tried to find it on the Net, thanks Geo for the find.

Oldbroad, if you have an Extra Modem, by all means, Try it Right Away and see how that fares out re: Hot vs Really Hot, etc.

Great idea, Starcom... I almost gave away my old 803.11n router after I upgraded to AC. But I'm glad I kept it in case I need to troubleshoot. Sort of like keeping my old 17" LCD monitor when I've got 3 or 4 computers going here!

Thanks Draclvr, and you are right, always good to keep some backup equipment if needed. Wow, you have 3 or 4 computers on the go + those that you maintain on the outside, more than enough to keep you busy and that does not include your famous tomato patch.

I hope Oldbroad is still going A-Ok.

To Draclvr: I love Mad's backup system too, I'm just jealous blech because I don't have the storage space for multiple backups.
