Hello. Have purchaced a triple disc set of games. Two play great, the above however has downloaded but after many minutes waiting for the game to open, all I get is a clear black illuminated screen. If I try to get rid, my cursor turns into either an upwards arrow or a side to side arrow which only pulls the black screen away from the desltop screen. The only way to get rid of it entirely is to log off! I am trying to play it on my Windows 7 laptop, not ideal I know but it won't play at all on my specially bought for gamming windows 8 I put the disc in and all is silent, and lacking the usuall whirring noises when a game is downloading. Can you help please.

You say the game is "downloading," but you also talk about a disk. Do you mean the game is installing? Games downloaded from the internet don't need a disk. When you put the disk into your Windows 8 computer, did you try opening up the drive from "This PC?"

I think Lozza doesn't mean either "downloaded" or "installed," but instead means "started the game."
Maybe the game was supposed to start at the end of the installation?

According to the "Windows 7 and Games" thread, Martin Mystere doesn't work in Windows 7, so it's extremely unlikely to work in Windows 8 or 10 either.

Martin Mystere: Operation Dorian Gray Judith has tried installing in all available XP compatibility modes on her 64-bit Win 7 and playing in different compatibility modes, but had no luck with getting the game to play.

Lozza, you can try the different compatibility modes, but you may not have any better luck than Judith did.

The French planete-adventure.net website claimed it was playable

Here is a Google translation of the section on Martin Mystere
Quote:
Martin Mystère: Operation Dorian Gray
-> Works under Vista and Windows 7/8 (32 / 64b) in Windows XP compatibility mode - At launch, the game may indicate that the file is missing d3drm.dll. Download ***this file*** and place it in C: \ windows \ system32 folder (C: \ Windows \ SysWOW64 on 64-bit systems). For more information, see ***this forum*** (in English). This trick does not guarantee the operation of the game: some people could not make it work on these systems.
If the game asks you to install DirectPlay, do it (automatic installation).
There is an error irrelevant to the closure of the game.

That information is from 2010, and there is the possibility that it won't work for anyone now due to Microsoft now blocking certain forms of CD-based copy "protection" (DRM) on Windows 7 and 8. The UK version of Martin Mystere required the CD in the drive, so had some form of DRM on it.

Sorry if I confused you with "downloading" rather than installing from a disc. On the Windows 7 (my lap top) It went seamlessly through the install and I have desk top picture etc. I click on the icon and then get the black screen and then nothing. I did mention to my son that it said too briefly for me to write down that it was not the correct resoloutions. Should be something like 133X782, too fast as I say. My son said it should alter resolutions automatically? What a shame I was looking forward to the game.
Oh by the way I did mean it should have started as soon as itwas installed.

Yes, games that use DirectX are supposed to do that.
But this game used an older version of DirectX than what Windows 7 uses, and the Windows 7 version doesn't seem to be working properly with the game.

The game is supposed to run in 1024x768 resolution.
You can try changing your desktop to that before starting the game to see if you get a different message. May not help though.

Oh Phooey! ha ha! Just a thought, I took a copy of the walkthrough in case I need a nudge playing. The person that did the walkthrough obviously got it to run, wonder what Windows she used? Thank you all for your time and trouble. Will try the resolution thing the that's it I guess.

If you mean the Gameboomers walkthrough, the date on that is July 2005, so it would have been played on XP. Windows Vista wasn't released until 2007.
