Per Gamespot:

"...Contraptions Workshop DLC will launch tonight, June 21, at midnight in North America EDT and across European territories at midnight local time, Bethesda has announced.

As its name suggests, Contraptions Workshop is themed around Fallout 4's Workshop tools that players can use to build settlements. New for Contraptions are things like conveyor belts, scaffolding kits, track kits, and logic gates. Also included are elevators, armor racks, and fireworks, as well as greenhouse and warehouse kits.

...Following Contraptions Workshop will be two further Fallout 4 add-ons, Vault-Tec Workshop ($5/July 2016) and Nuka World ($20/August 2016). These expansions are also included with the Fallout Season Pass. Nuka World will be the game's final add-on, though players can make use of mods (on PC and console) to continually try new things."

Omigosh. Just when I thought it was over.

Well, it is over, temporarily, because the game was crashing when I tried to load it. I'm taking a break and hopefully this will resolve with the new updates. A game of DA:I outta do it, at which point all of the new stuff will be installed and I can carry on rebuilding the Wasteland.

BTW, Trail, the Far Harbour expansion contains the best building sites of all. I can't do them all justice at the moment -- too exhausted and I need to go adventuring for a while. But I do have one incredible beach settlement.

If I ever play this game again I'm going to ignore the Minutemen because their quests are just too darned intrusive. I mean seriously, you're in a dungeon somewhere fighting to save the world and the Minutemen can't just go and help the settlement under attack? They actually have to have ME there? No wonder the Minutemen fell apart.

Agree with you 100% Hagatha. That last marathon game I had going was fun as heck because I didn't engage the minutemen quests at all. That's why I liked doing the early BOS quests to get XP if I wanted to level up. Those are more like the grinding quests you do for XP in an MMORPG; go find this, go kill that - Easy peasy. Then I have time for exploring and don't have to worry about a couple of smelly settlers who can't handle a rifle even though I've completely surrounded them with concrete, steel and the laser barrage of death. After the Gunner mini-nuke incident with one of my smaller settlements I figured someone would come out with a mod that balances that gameplay better and I won't have see "Defend Whiney-Whiney Settlement: Quest Failed" when I didn't even see the warning pop-up because I was too busy trying not to turn into a puddle of goo while battling a Mirelurk Queen! lol

Ya. I'm in the middle of the Far Harbour area, and it's fun enough. I AM ignoring the settler pleas for help now. Got better things to do. Sink or time time now.

Actually, the last couple of times I've received notification that one of my settlements has been damaged by a raid, I've gone to check it out and found nothing sinister at all -- no wrecked crops, no dead settlers, no dead enemies, just happy campers making me caps. Bug, I guess.

I think I'm quite ready for another adventure.

Not sure these workshop things are really worth the dosh. They seem to be there to help justify the rather large hike in the season pass price.

Yeah, the Contraptions Workshop should have been together with the Wasteland Workshop. If the Upcoming Vault-Tec Workshop doesn't actually give you access to a usable, livable vault (minus dead bodies of course)and just adds more junk to the Workshop mode, then it should have been combined all in one with the others.

This strikes me as being similar to the infamous Oblivion Horse Armor DLC that Bethesda included in that pack. If I recall correctly much of it wasn't even their content.

Ah, remember the days when DLC was known as Expansion Packs and all of them enlarged the game experience with new quests, characters and gear? *sigh*

Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go trap a Deathclaw and see if I can coax him on to a conveyer belt. lol

I'll be interested to see what's in the DLC. I really enjoyed the new stuff in the Wasteland Workshop because it meant I could make clean and tidy concrete settlements with no junk or dead bodies lying around. Some of the most inhospitable sites became wonderful.

At least Far Harbour gives us a new, pretty large area and new quests.

Yeah, I'm very interested to see what Nuka-Land will bring us. I'm really burned out right now on the settlement thing, but that may pass once I finish the game of NWN I'm currently playing.

I jumped over to a game of DA:I for a break, too. I'm hoping my ctd problem with Fallout will have resolved itself by the time I get back to my Fallout game (I'm hoping the update will help, or possibly a Steam update).

Sounds similar to what happened to my game after the Wasteland Workshop update, when any interaction with the workshop caused a CTD. The saves were corrupted and I just had to restart. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you.

I would be VERY annoyed if I had to rebuild my settlements. Some of them took two days to create (which I admit, is a bit OCD). I know how to short-hand the building now, though, and I would ignore some sites as a matter of course.

EDIT: No dice. Not loading. But that's fine; I've played way too much anyway. I'll finish my game of DA:I and move on to Witcher 3.

Yep, I was in the same boat when it happened to me. Bunch of huge settlements, awesome number of power armor, great weapons and BOOM.

Fingers crossed, but so far my "starter game" with the Red Rocket fortress that I have saved has been working fine when I get new games going. Makes it way more convenient to get a game going when I've already got a home base. I've been making it a habit to save a new game, right when I start after an update. That way the preference files and saves should reflect the newest changes.

Aha! I updated my graphics driver and presto! My game is back. I have an automatic NVidia updater, so it's dead easy.

I haven't bothered with the power armour. I leave it around for settlers. The downside is that sometimes a raider gets hold of it and wreaks havoc.

Now I have to decide between my awesome game of DA:I or this one.... or maybe just both, as the mood strikes.

Nice, looks like you lucked out thumbsup

I've noticed a couple small aesthetic differences in the game since the last update besides the new workshop stuff. The Guards at Diamond City now have open face helmets, looks kind of like what the Brotherhood initiates used to wear. Also some of the textures, especially the old power armor stations looks more detailed. I wish they'd give us the more high tech looking power armor stands instead of the ones that look like an engine winch. Well, we'll see what else they have in store, I needed a break from NWN and Darksiders so off to the wasteland I go...again.

I'm playing with the elevator, which is very cool though it seems to throw off my floors/ceilings by one width. I discovered that you have to use a double upper floor to make up the difference. So now my giant settlements can have interior elevators, and the smaller places can have exterior elevators. Maybe it's time I developed Starlight Drive-in as a full-on industrial-style complex.

Haven't really looked at much of the other stuff. I don't like the barns/warehouses because they look like trash in my nice aesthetically pleasing settlements.Surely the Intrepid Adventurer would be able to, I don't know, repair them? Given that she's now building concrete bunkers complete with nuclear power, a hammer and nails and a couple of pieces of would surely not be out of her reach, skills-wise.

And now it's beach barbeque time. This year we're discovering the awesomeness of living right on the water.

EDIT: Some of the new stuff is really cool. Finally, a way to put conduit through a wall without having to play around with windows.

EDIT: After a break in DA:O I'm back. I've discovered the joys of building with the warehouse stuff -- buildings that fit the landscape of Far Harbor and environs, AND everything clicks together properly. It's not as sterile as the concrete.

I'm through the main quest line of Far Harbour and am putting some last touches on settlements so I don't have to babysit them while they generate money for me, then I'm back to finish the main game plotline.

One thing about the DLC story line bothers me:
Click to reveal..
DIMA killed, or tried to kill, the original Nick Valentine synth, according to one of the recordings I found, yet there is no story line about that? Disappointing.)

Hi there,

Fallout 4 was the first game for me in the series. I have now used huge 274 hours playing it. I'm on level 69 and I've found 313 locations according to game statistics. 310 of them I found all by myself and the missed three by cross-checking against this map. I guess that was it then. I'm not interested in playing the game partly again and supporting other factions. What's done is done and I supported mainly Broherhood of Steel and the Minutemen.

For me it's the story that matters most and I found 2/3 of the base game too repetitive and circling around very similar tasks. For my opinion everything important could have been told and played in way less than 100 hours.

I'm really in doubt whether to buy Season Pass or not. How have you found currently published DLC's, are they worth the price? Do they bring something totally new to the game or just expand the area? Is there something worth mentioning in the new Workshops?

I would like to hear your objective opinion without putting (or leaving) your rosey tinted spectacles on.

Timo

That's somewhat of a difficult question given that one of the only two DLC that actually adds quests and a new area hasn't been released yet.

If the second quest DLC ends up costing the same as the first (Far Harbor) then the season pass will be worth it because you get both quest based DLC and all the workshop stuff.

If the theme of one of the quest based DLC's doesn't seem like something you'd get into and you aren't into building detailed settlements, then it's probably not worth it. The other DLC's just add lots of stuff to the workshop for settlements.

The other 'Boomers will have to chime in on how good Far Harbor is, I haven't had a chance to fire it up yet. I too, got a bit burned out on the game so decided to give it a rest.

EDIT: To be fair, Automatron does add a short story quest to the game and doesn't deal with settlement building. It's mostly about getting a new companion or two and building robots.

I would say it most definately is NOT worth it. The Automatron questline, whilst I found enjoyable, is very short. Most of the the other DLC's (the workshop stuff) is nothing more than filler to help justify the hiked season pass price (a price gouge if ever there was one). Far Harbour, whilst it adds a fairly large, new landmass, it is very sparse location wise compared to the main map and again I found the main questline disappointingly short. Obviously we dont know about Nuka World yet but by all accounts it is not as big as Far Harbour.

For something that Bethesda, before the release of the game, said was a take ot or leave part of the game they have relied on the workshop/builing rather too heavily for the DLC. Probably because it is a lot easier to churn out than doing proper quest based additions. I would say this has been a particularly lazy (on the whole) set of DLC - but this is of course the company that first gave DLC a bad name (horse armour anyone?)

So if the workshop stuff is not your thing then that knocks an even bigger hole in the season pass value I would say. My advice would be to wait for the large Season Pass price drop that will most definately happen after the last part of the DLC has been released (unless you are very rich of course, in which case go for it :-))

Oh good grief, don't even bring that one up lol Including content that wasn't theirs was a low point for Bethesda. I'm sure they don't even want to remember that one.

Thank you very much for your enlightening opinions, Trail_Mystic and mj2c.

Your opinions strenghtened my thoughts about season pass. I have decided it is best to skip it at this point and wait for the full season content to be published and look carefully what the reviews say. And even then, wait for the sale.

It is very rare for me to buy any games at full price when they are brand new. In last few years I remember only couple of exceptions which I bought on early phase with almost full price: "The Vanishing of Ethan Carter", "Crookz - The Big Heist" and "The Last Crown: Midnight Horror". Usually I wait for a sale and there has to be something special to pay more than 10 bucks.

But if I leave FO4 for a moment now, it seems to take 25+ GB on my C-drive. Steams says 30 GB for the base game and the same 30 (!) for both "Automatron" and "Far Harbor". Have any of you experience how much these DLC's really take more space? How much space does it take for you with current season content installed?

I wouldn't like to temporarily uninstall the base game (Remove local content in Steam terms) but with a 256 GB SSD C-drive where I usually keep only those 1 or 2 games under play I may have to do it. For example "Assassin's Creed: Syndicate" with season pass content took massive 60 GB. My concern is how I keep my FO4 save games alive for future reinstallation in such case. How does the base game progress affect playing the DLC content, have they any relationship? Any experience?

Thanks in advance for sharing your expert opinions and experience.

Timo

I can only speak to the base game with the new workshop content. Just checked my Steamapps FO4 folder and showing 26GB.

As far as saving base games to be played later, it's kind of a chance no matter what. I've had existing games get messed up after updates in FO4 more than once, but in about half of those cases it was solved by re-saving the game in the updated version and then starting from there.

It is difficult to say how much space the base+dlc takes because I also have mods installed as well so my folder is about 31gigs. The dlc's shouldnt take up that much extra room as they are using most of their assets (meshes and textures) from the base game.

As for savegames I havent had any problems with them when dlc's are added. The only time I get a warning is if the save contains assets (mainly from a mod) that has been turned off/removed.

Just thinking about it I have to say FO4 has been the most stable of the Bethesda games I've played. It has maybe crashed 2 or 3 times in a few hundred hours. Skyrim on the other hand would usually crash/freeze at least once a session, especially with mods added.

I've had few problems with FO4, with one notable exception where my game wouldn't launch after an update. That was easily resolved by updating my graphics driver (which, on my laptop is an idiot-proof process).

I think I'm done with the game for now, but I have to say I love it, not because it's terribly original or has a compelling story -- which it really doesn't -- but because there was so much to do. Bored with adventuring? Make a new settlement. Bored with that? Go annoy the Brotherhood. Bored with that? Try to find every single location. Sick of that? Ditch the heavily-upgraded Gauss Rifle and start a new career as a pistol-packin mama, or a hand-to hand expert.

I'm sure I'll come back to my game eventually just to finish off the main plot with the Railroad.

By the way, Far Harbor has a lot of new content and it took the better part of a month to finish exploring the area and finishing the new quests. Well worth the money, I thought.

I think I'm quite ready for another adventure.
