what brand make model is this.... did it come with software? Have you tried deleting it and reloading it? Just thoughts til the techie's come along.

My guess is that it's defective and that you should take it back to the store for a replacement.

I've never had a keyboard that didn't have typing capability out of the box. There might be some fancy keyboards with extra keys (like media keys) that don't work, but something standard like the space bar should work out of the box.

Or it might have a crumb or something under the spacebar. I've had that happen before when a key stopped working - a blast with some compressed air did the trick.

New keyboard delivered and all OK - thanks everyone for your input! Moral of the story don't throw away your old keyboard until you have tested the new one.
