I played this game many, many years ago and was one of those oddballs who liked it. So I decided to play it again. Now, I'm realizing the vacuum I have entered. There are no active discussion threads anymore, no KQ VIII game forum to go to for when you are stumped on specifics. WTs are one thing, and I found one here at 'Boomers and another even more throgough one on line, but they always are sketchy at some point, and I've hit it. "Rocks." I need four rocks, have only stumbled across two, and the WT says only "...by now, hopefully, you have found four rocks." No clue where they all are to be found. ha ha ha
I am dealing with that room where there are four metal "trigger" pads on the ground, to be weighed down (don't know why yet). I've killed three critters in such a way that they fell on three of the plates. I could do this with the fourth critter and not need ANY of the rocks, so I could activate this mechanism without rocks at all ~ but reading on in the WT it says I should retrieve all the rocks when you are finished because you will need them later. So there it is. I could execute the task via my trickery, but still wouldn't have the missing rocks. What is an intrepid Save-the-World knight supposed to do?
Also, over near the River Styx boatman, I found a two-level tower that I climbed up, but found nothing to do up there. The WT mentions finding some health potions there, but I walked all around both levels and found zilch (have done this twice, in case something in the game would change it). There is another tower in this level, also, but it has the skellie I have not managed to dispatch yet.

I, too, attempted the game again quite a long while back and I did eventually find the four "vital" rocks after much searching (and cussing) and searching again - but I have no idea where I found them at this late date. Sorry, Reenie I almost made it to the end of the game, too, doing much better than I did when I played it following its original release (1998) but in the end the many and well known frustrations just got TOO much and I threw in the towel EDIT :I just found a "cheat" instruction that would supposedly get you the rocks - if the cheat is compatible with your version of the game. Would you like me to send you the instruction .... Or do you already know it ??

This may be the walkthrough that you are already following, but just in case, here is another one. I also found this piece of information, once you have all the rocks: Problem - Button for Hall of Justice won't go down: The button in the Hall of Justice in DoD won't go down no matter what. There is a well known bug with these plates. If you only place one or three rocks and save and leave this may happen.
If you place one rock and then place three later or if you place three rocks and then place one rock much later, all the plates work except war. You can only place all four rocks or two rocks at a time never do this with the odd numbers as this is the outcome.
Solution #1: Restore to an earlier point in the game and place all four rocks the first time. If you don't have all 4 rocks, when yo first enter the room, fight what's there so that they fall on the plates instead of the rocks.
Solution #2: Only place two rocks and then remove two and place rocks on other two plates.

Mad, I may want that cheat for the Rocks, as I don't fancy duck-walking every path in DoD again, looking for the other two rocks. ha ha I already got all the gates open, anyway, using dead guys and one of my own rocks. I'm just concerned I'll need those rocks going forward.
Yes, this game is a bigger challenge to me now than it was back in '98. I don't usually play games in which people are trying to kill me and nearly every surface is toxic. It is hard on me because, if I get too stressed out by the combat, it gets the angina thing going. I don't know if I will be able to play through the whole thing at my age.
Thanks, you others, for the links. I'll check them out, too.

The cheat I found is this While playing the game, press Left-Control + Left-Shift + 7. A console will appear. You can give yourself stuff by typing "give [item] [number]" (ie. give mushroom 100) that will add 100 mushrooms to your inventory. The command "teleport" will allow you to place Conner anywhere on the map. You would type "teleport" in the console and then press Left-Control + Left-Shift + 7 to exit the console. Bring up the big map and click anywhere on it. Conner will end up there. Caution: placing Conner up high where he will fall to the ground will kill him. So press Left-Control + Left-Shift + 7 Enter "give rock 4" into console Press Left-Control + Left-Shift + 7 to exit the console Check to see if you got rocks. I don't know if this cheat is the same one Mad knows about, or if it works with all versions of the game. More cheats for the game here (including god mode) http://www.gameboomers.com/wtcheats/pcKk/KQ8c.htm

Reenie .... The cheat I found says this - which looks to be the same as Jenny100 has quoted ********************************************************** KQVIII Codes: To get into the game console type shift-ctrl-7 all at the same time. You won't be able to control the game again until you hit shift-ctrl-7 to go back. Once you are in the console you'll see a prompt asking for your password. Guess what, there's no password, that's just there for fun. Type in all codes in lower case letters. I have tried some of these codes and they work pretty well...... give (allows you to give Connor stuff that he hasn't gotten yet, provided you know the programmer's name of the object. Some of them are pretty weird because they were made early in the design. For example to give Connor more money you would type "give silvercoins 100" which would then give him 100 gold pieces (they originally were going to be silver). Other things you can give Connor are heath items (mushroom, sacredwater, crystal, elixeroflife), magic items (clarity, invisible, invulnerable, strength), and rocks (rock). You can also give him armor (leathergloves, chainmailsuit), weapons (flamesword, icecrossbow), and inventory items (mold, ashes, goodskull). There are too many items to post here, but I'm sure someone will figure them all out. (Don’t say rocks it’s just rock !!) ********************************************************** Other cheats are shown as well but I just copied the "rocks" one in case you do want to try it. Cheers. I was actually googling the map to mark the rock locations, so finding that was a gem. I figured I'd post it here even if Reenie doesn't need it, incase someone else finds this thread looking for it (I search the boards when I replay the games sometimes :D)

Rennie, that fourth one is on that tower's bridge in the center of the map. It is easy to miss, so if you's like a video, or screencap of it's locale, just ask Best of luck!

With the battle by the bridge of life, I recommend using potions for healing. I usually have to do this part 3+ times, but I make sure I use the invisibility potion. this does help. Also, make sure you save before going into that opening. I make a separate save before that part

you're welcome, Reenie, and good luck with the game (I usually keep a finger on the number on the keyboard I need for certain potions/helpers, then in battle if I need to use a crystal, for instance, I can just press the button with that finger)

One walkthrough I found says this: Get close and talk to the Swamp Wisps. They ask for a secret in return for cure of poisonous water. Click them again and Connor tells about the secret from the Whispering Weeds. Click the Wisps yet again to see a magic flower and learn of a Golden Ladle to cleanse the waters. Take the flower and Connor eats it. Now you're protected from poisonous waters. Hopefully someone else will be able to help more - it sounds like this is what you have already done.

Yep, that sounds like what I did. I clicked on the flower and heard that little "reward sound" the game makes when you achieve something, but the flower is still there. I've tried several times to take the flower again, even tried to cut it with my sword, etc. Nada.
Is the flower supposed to be gone? Now, the pixies are done talking with me. Am I screwed?
Just had an idea: Use the "Invulnerable" cheat to get past the poisonous water, and then turn it back off again. I won't need the potion for the poison water once I leave the Swamp place, right?

I myself didn't get to play this game until I GOG put it out and I could play it first on my vista laptop and now with my windows 7 one I know I put the link where I got the same in the email Reenie, but I'm gonna put it in this thread too incase someone comes here looking for help sometime down the road and those saves would help them too http://www.sierrahelp.com/Misc/SaveGames.html All saves are in a zip file per realm (such as the swamp region's saves are all together)

Thanks to all your help, I have finished up in the swamp and headed off to the underground realm. Now, it is like playing "Doom," in that you are creeping around corners, being shot at by guys you can't see. ha ha Still, I am glad to be out of the swamp. I had forgotten ALL of this stuff.
Have had some odd glitches hit from time to time. At one point, after buying some stuff, my character would not put down his coins so I could resume playing. At another, he would not take up his weapon. I had to go back to a previous saves where things were OK. So I am saving often.

Wow, after the loooong level for Dimension of the Dead and the challenges of the Swamp, the mines and the Lava world went very fast ~ and so did the Sun levels. I had a few glitches along the way, but overall, I enjoyed it. There was some nonsense at the very end regarding the final celebration video when I defeated the ultimate Boss. I was supposed to be able to go back to Daventry and see everyone healed and joyous. All I got was a blank screen and "video not available; vids:iv50 decompressor not found." Wah! You could hear the audio playing, so you knew something was happening, you just weren't included. This happened a couple of times during the game, too, usually at a Level Up video, but they weren't such a big deal as at the end.
Long story short: KQ VIII may be a fun nostalgia trip for someone who played it back in the late 90's. There is a pretty consistent amount of fighting to be done (sword and crossbow, mostly), but you find all the usual power ups and health and special stuff after every fight, so you can't really be "killed" in the game. (Of course, you can restart a Save, if you actually did run out of everything and died.) Once you clear a level, the bad guys don't respawn (and I was a little sorry they didn't because with all of them gone, after a while, the worlds were pretty empty).
There are 50 Save Game slots, so more than anyone would need.
You control the character's movement with the four arrow keys on your keyboard, and this was pretty twitchy for me in this game. I had a terrible time, and was still running into the walls or turning my back to an attacker even up to the last scene. Just couldn't get the hang of it. If this game were realistic, my poor character would have died long before leaving the first world, from accumulated concussions. ha ha ha
I only remember a few "puzzles" in the whole game (all but the Prime Numbers puzzle at the bridge in the volcanic world were easy). Really, all you are trying to do is eliminate bad guys, run the usual errands, and locate keys to open locked doors; no "puzzles" involved there. There is the usual amount of jumping but not timed, and you can save between each jump rather than have to start over.
Yes, the graphics are extremely dated, but it is an engaging adventure, the main character is not a jerk, the various "worlds" are fun to explore, and I was thoroughly engrossed in it. I am not your typical "Action" gamer.
I did have to get help at a few of points. One was finding all the rocks (don't ask), the second was what the idea was behind the Prime Numbers bridge (look it up if you play KQ VIII), and the last was when I was stumped in the snowing world and didn't realize that the way to get inside the big fort was to fall through a grating in the roof. ha ha

Congrats on the completion, Reenie. If you're playing the version from gog.com, they took out that ending video (I don't remember why) but I found someone has it uploaded on youtube. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2dWTqkvx2SU
