I'm trying to play Rhem 2 on a Windows 8 64-bit system. The game installs and launches but none of the videos display. As an example, the beginning has someone talking to you with the text of what they're saying displayed on the bottom of the screen. I see the text but not the video of the person speaking. The next part is supposed to be a ride in the rail car, which I don't see but end up instantly at the end of the line. I can pick up a swipe card and swipe the card in the reader but at this point the game freezes.

I installed the QuickTime version (6.5.2) from the game's install disk but still have the same problem. I did not uninstall the version of QuickTime that was on my machine. Is QuickTime the problem or could it have something to do with Macromedia Projector? No error messages are shown.

I tried XP SP3 compatibility mode on the exe but got the same results.

I found a Gameboomers thread where Lagavulin suggested copying quicktime.qts into the game folder but I can't find this file anywhere on my computer.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

I don't know if this will be pertinent as I am running WinXP. In Programs/QuickTime/QTSystem I have the file quicktime.qts.

Attempting to install an older version of QuickTime over a newer one will fail, and QuickTime isn't 100% backward compatible.

The symptoms you described are typical of a "wrong QuickTime" problem. You could also try adjusting QuickTime to run in "QuickTime Safe Mode" -- look in your Windows Control Panel and see if your current version has that option.

I think you'd need the quicktime.qts file from the version that came with the game to get it working right.

Thanks Robert and Jenny

I'll check for the safe mode option and see what that does. If that isn't available, I'll uninstall all instances of QuickTime and reinstall the version that came with the game. Is quicktime.qts a file that's available on all QuickTime installations? I couldn't find one on my machine.

If you have it on your computer at all it might be for the too-new version of QuickTime.

The quicktime.qts file on my Windows 7 computer is in
C:\Program Files (x86)\QuickTime\QTSystem\QuickTime.qts

Again for what it is worth as I'm describing a WinXP system, I have QuickTime 7.7.3 installed. I installed Rhem2 from the English 2 CD package by copying from CD1 the Rhem2_E directory to my C:\Games directory. I then placed the game CD#2 in my CDRom drive and started the game (Rhem2.exe) from a 1600x1200 32-bit screen.
The game played perfectly with all videos working.

So on my system the game plays with a newer QuickTime than is part of the game package.

Thanks Jenny and Robert.

I tried to uninstall quicktime but it won't go away....lol. I'm trying to do this in the Programs and Features screen using the uninstall link. It says that quicktime uninstalled but it still shows up in the program list and is still available in the start menu. However, when I click on the shortcut in the start menu, the only option I have is to view the About screen. One option when uninstalling from the Programs and Features screen is to "Uninstall All" quicktime related files which they say is not recommended. Is that what I need to do?

Maybe if I can get back to having QuickTime work I can try the way that you got to work, Robert.

Have you tried running CCleaner on the registry? Sometimes bits are left behind there. Not sure about the "uninstall all" option. I'd be tempted to do it though - it's not you can't reinstall if needed.

Once again, weeds are my life!

That is what you had to do with Windows 95/98 -- uninstall EVERYTHING to do with QuickTime. Then reboot and install the older version. I don't know how it works in Windows 7, but since you'll be installing the older version back afterwards, I wouldn't worry too much. You can also make a restore point before uninstalling "Everything" to do with QuickTime.

Other than old games, there's nothing you need QuickTime for on a modern computer anyway. There are better programs to play movie files or do other non-game things that QuickTime used to be good for. It's even been recommended that you uninstall all versions of QuickTime due to security flaws, but that was under the assumption that you weren't playing games that needed it and could use VLC or Windows Media Player instead.

You can try ccleaner after uninstalling too, but it may be enough to do the thorough uninstall of QuickTime.

Tried the "Uninstall Everything' option for Quicktime. Uninstalled Rhem 2. Copied the Rhem 2 folder from the CD to the hard drive. Launched the game. The video still doesn't play but I do get a big red box with a large red "X" through it. Gave up on that for a while.

Bought Myst Masterpiece from GOG and installed it. It wanted to install QuickTime 4 Lite, which I did. The next time I tried Rhem 2, it played fine. So, I don't understand why the QuickTime version that came with Rhem 2 (6.5.2) didn't work. Anyway, I'm off playing two great games! Thanks for the help, everyone!

That's interesting that RHEM II works with QuickTime 4 Lite.
Thanks for letting us know.
