I am a thief, so joining the Thieves Guild is kind of essential.

I get to the point where Brynjolf is supposed to introduce me to the rest of the guild, after I complete Taking Care of Business, and he leads me just into the Cistern area an then no longer communicates with me. After a short time the thieves all attack me.

If I back out of the Cistern for a while and go back in, Brynjolf has vanished and cannot be found anywhere in Riften.

PLEASE tell me there is a way to get around this. I'm already level 25 and just can't bear a restart. This didn't happen to me in my first game, so it might be related to mods, I'm guessing, and I have no way to figure out which one is the culprit.

I literally can't go on with my game until this is fixed.

Searches I've done for console commands come up with posts about how the console commands don't work if your game is messed up with mods.

EDIT: Aha! It was the Castle Grey mod. As soon as I worked out how to disable it, my game resumed correctly. Too bad. That looked like an awesome home base.

Only if a mod directly impacts an item or quest trigger related to a specific console command would there be an issue.

In this case it sounds like there was something messed up with the aggro settings. I'm not familiar with the mod, but in checking it's description it doesn't seem like the author would have done anything to mess up faction alignments.

Do you have any other mods that impact the Thieve's guild or your character as a thief? It might also be a load order issue, that you just happened to fix by disabling/enabling (causing an overwrite) certain mods.

I actually found a few posts here and there that refer to Castle Grey messing up this quest (and I think other Thieves Guild quests), so it seems it's not just me. I thought I'd just take a chance and disable it, and the quest immediately started once I did. I loaded my save, the quest marker appeared over Brynjolf's head, which it hadn't previously, and off we went.

I haven't had any other problems since, but that's not saying a lot because I've only played a few hours more. I intend to finish the Thieves and see if I can remember how to find that other sneaskie faction and then get back to the main quest.

I winkled Frost out from under the Black Briars, so travelling with be a lot more fun now.

I think I'm quite ready for another adventure.

Ah, OK. Interesting, the author must have changed some settings unintentionally. Not uncommon. Good thing you found those postings that mentioned the mod thumbsup

There were a couple of other mods mentioned in the same context. I wish I could remember them off hand -- but I think one of them was a town mod - maybe Whiterun?

I maybe jumping to conclusions, but it seems like I've been having a number of tweaky bugs crop up since that last unknown update that loaded right around the time of the Special Edition release. Mostly textures dropping from static objects and a higher number of CTD's, also been having difficulties with one of the mod tools I use to customize abodes and my surroundings Jaxonz Positioner . I'm going to have to check the forums more to see if anyone else is reporting new issues cropping up.

You know, I have, too. A freeze here and there, some lagging, and a couple of CTD's. But maybe I'm just being paranoid since the Thief Guild bugged out on me. grin

It could also be an accumulative thing for me. I've got my current character up to level 56 running 120 mods, 133 total "plugins" if I include patches and mods together. Also playing at Expert level. Dragons are ridiculously difficult to kill and it's a hack and slash fest when I hit a band of roaming bandits. Been more than once that I fat-fingered commands on my keyboard and hosed that evenings play-through in the heat of battle by dropping my window or activating another program inadvertently. I want to get this one up to level 70 so I can get into it with a Legendary level dragon. I've only seen one once and it laughed at my character as it flew by. My poor self-esteem lol

Expert level sounds like work, to me! I'm not allowing myself to pay for training anything overtly combat related -- weapons or magic, basically -- but that's as far as I go. Most of my training has been in Blacksmithing, since I love Light Armour.

Boy,those Thief Guild quests do go on...and on...and on.

I think I'm quite ready for another adventure.

It can be. Don't quote me on this, but I think that in the levels below that they only give basic perks to leveled foes. Once you get into Expert, they start to give the more advanced perks, so you're facing foes that are close to your ability level or in the case of bosses, higher. I turned off the foe health bars because it makes it even worse when you see your attacks only make their health drop a hair.

The only thing I can really say about fighting dragons is that they are susceptible to poisons. I suppose you'd need legendary strength potions for Expert dragons, though. But I'm having no trouble with dragons as long as I have a few poison potions at hand.

Since you can only use one Shout at once, I think I'll turn my dragon souls into perks instead. More bang for the buck. For now, anyway. I'm almost all the way up the Sneak, Lockpick, and Archery trees. Next is Light armour and One-Handed, Speech, and the whatever magic levels up when I use it. My usual Elder Scrolls character, only so far without Magic, for a change.

I think I'm quite ready for another adventure.

I like that "perks for souls" mod - To me it seems canon and logical. During the Dragonborn DLC where dragon souls are directly related to power per the dialogue, it's not really expanded on outside of the usual game mechanics and seems like it should be.

That being said, I just got the Shout that disarms enemies, and I think I might power that up to the max and set it as my default. I want to try sneaking up on an enemy and disarming it before it even sees me. Unless it's a mage, it would have to try to punch me to death while I hit it with my mace/sword/dagger/arrows.

I think I'm quite ready for another adventure.

Sewwwww...what's a good castle mod? I have way too much stuff, and even the house in Solitude doesn't have everything need -- such as storage space and a smithy.

EDIT: So now I have two of three homes almost fully built and have spent some time on the Ash-ravaged Solthsteim Island. At fist I was all overcome with nostalgia, what with the view of Red Mountain and the original Morrowind music, but quickly realized it's a whole lotta empty. Sigh.
