Apparently there were creative differences between producer Robert Redford and director Errol Morris, so this movie was never sent to theaters. When it was released on DVD they spent the bare minimum, For this reason the aspect ratio has not been corrected to modern tech. So you're going to see boom mics appearing on the top of the screen. Somebody online said if you can watch in wide screen that'll fix that problem but I have no idea how to force that. So I'm just trying to ignore the mic when it shows up. series."

Jim Chee (Lou Diamond Philips) is new to the district so he gets the crappy jobs. Like staking out a highway in a marked police car in broad day light in the off chance the bootleggers will drive by. And watching a windmill someone keep vandalizing. Then a body is found on Hopi land and it reported as being a dead Navo. Though the body is unrecognizable after coyotes have been eating off it. If that's not enough a plane known to be carrying drugs crashes and when the drugs are not found the FBI decides officer Chee took them.

Fred Ward plays Chee's boss Lt. Joe Leaphorn
John Karlen (Willie Loomis and other roles in the original Dark Shadows TV series) Jake West, trading post owner

Chee narrates the story. Chee's wanting to be a medicine man plays less of a role in this then in the PBS films. Leaphorn has less of a role in this as well. Differences between Navo and Hopi don't really come into play. The Hopi sheriff says he knows Navo have a thing about death and is willing to handle the corpse so Chee doesn't have to. And in one scene the sheriff is translating Chee's English into Hopi for an older Hopi. That's about it.

Robert Redford didnt' like his own production and while I agree the PBS shows are better. This wasn't bad. Did have one virtue, no annoying lady lawyer.
