I celebrated Thanksgiving in an old-fashioned way. I invited everyone in my neighborhood to my house, we had an enormous feast, and then I killed them and took their land.

JON STEWART

``````````````````
Did You Know?
Q. Why do men's clothes have buttons on the right while women's clothes have buttons on the left?
A. When buttons were invented, they were very expensive and worn primarily by the rich. Since most people are right-handed, it is easier to push buttons on the right through holes on the left. Because wealthy women were dressed by maids, dressmakers put the buttons on the maid's right! And that's where women's buttons have remained since.
Q. Why do ships and aircraft use 'mayday' as their call for help?
A. This comes from the French word m'aidez - meaning 'help me' - and is pronounced approximately, 'mayday.'
Q. Why are zero scores in tennis called 'love'?
A. In France , where tennis became popular, round zero on the scoreboard looked like an egg and was called 'l'oeuf,' which is French for 'egg.' When tennis was introduced in the US , Americans (mis)pronounced it 'love.'
Q. Why do X's at the end of a letter signify kisses?
A. In the Middle Ages, when many people were unable to read or write, documents were often signed using an X. Kissing the X represented an oath to fulfill obligations specified in the document. The X and the kiss eventually became synonymous.
Q. Why is shifting responsibility to someone else called 'passing the buck'?
A. In card games, it was once customary to pass an item, called a buck, from player to player to indicate whose turn it was to deal. If a player did not wish to assume the responsibility of dealing, he would 'pass the buck' to the next player.
Q. Why do people clink their glasses before drinking a toast?
A. It used to be common for someone to try to kill an enemy by offering him a poisoned drink. To prove to a guest that a drink was safe, it became customary for a guest to pour a small amount of his drink into the glass of the host. Both men would drink it simultaneously. When a guest trusted his host, he would only touch or clink the host's glass with his own.
Q. Why are people in the public eye said to be 'in the limelight'?
A. Invented in 1825,limelight was used in lighthouses and theatres by burning a cylinder of lime which produced a brilliant light. In the theatre, a performer 'in the limelight' was the center of attention.
Q. Why is someone who is feeling great 'on cloud nine'?
A. Types of clouds are numbered according to the altitudes they attain, with nine being the highest cloud If someone is said to be on cloud nine, that person is floating well above worldly cares.
Q. In golf, where did the term 'Caddie' come from?
A. When Mary Queen of Scots went to France as a young girl, Louis, King of France, learned that she loved the Scots game 'golf.' So he had the first course outside of Scotland built for her enjoyment. To make sure she was properly chaperoned (and guarded) while she played, Louis hired cadets from a military school to accompany her.
Mary liked this a lot and when returned to Scotland (not a very good idea in the long run), she took the practice with her. In French, the word cadet is pronounced 'ca-day' and the Scots changed it into 'caddie.
Q. Why are many coin banks shaped like pigs?
A. Long ago, dishes and cookware in Europe were made of a dense orange clay called 'pygg'. When people saved coins in jars made of this clay, the jars became known as 'pygg banks.' When an English potter misunderstood the word, he made a container that resembled a pig. And it caught on.
Q. Did you ever wonder why dimes, quarters and half dollars have notches (milling), while pennies and nickels do not?
A. The US Mint began putting notches on the edges of coins containing gold and silver to discourage holders from shaving off small quantities of the precious metals. Dimes, quarters and half dollars are notched because they used to contain silver. Pennies and nickels aren't notched because the metals they contain are not valuable enough to shave.
It's going to be another long work week for me. Hopefully, starting next week, things will be calmer, as I should no longer have to do the job of two people alone. crazy As for this week, apparently I'm going back in. lol
Have a great day Joe! I have my physical in the morning. I hate not having my coffee when I get up!
Could use some good vibes for my furnace that it isn't something major.
Venus, hope work passes quickly!
Have a wonderful day!
No Spacequest this morning? Hope everything's ok. yes
Ana good luck with the physical, and with the furnace. hearts
Flotsam it's awesome to see you in the diner, whether it's 'welcome' or welcome back. wave
Venus I hope your work week goes by quickly. yes
Haroula is it cold over there right now? Have a nice day. woot
Gerry are you doing anything exciting today? I'm not.
Connie thank you for the French toast. Enjoy your day. yes
Gail I'm very reluctant to go for a walk with my dogs this morning.
We had storms overnight that kept me awake for a while. I was thinking about taking another sleeping pill, because it was 3:30am. Fortunately I did finally go back to sleep. sleep
So it's supposed to clear off, but right now it's still dark, windy, and wet.
I'm grateful for the rain, but I'm sure we didn't get enough.
Time to get a refill.
Have a super day everyone.
joe
A lovely cool and calm Monday here. The only sounds are kittens running and jumping all over each other on the deck. The usual routine after breakfast. Last night, after a long siege of Walking Dead, I showered, went to bed, and was all snuggly warm when I noticed the security monitor in the bedroom had MOM cat sitting by the back door, looking and pacing. THEN I remembered I'd forgotten the evening feeding! Yep, I usually feed one last little bit of food just before bed so the kittens and mom and the remaining feral, Ninja, can have one last bite before the possums eat up everything.
So out of bed, throw on a bathrobe and sandals, go out in the 50 degree, windy, raining, weather, and am met by ALL of them on the feeding table. You would think they were starving. But as usual, they gulped down the food, and then ran off to play before bed. Tonight, I won't forget. Hope the neighbors enjoyed the 'show'. Don't know how much the wind blowing my robe exposed! redface
It's Monday so that means another hundred bucks from my 'visitor' who seems to be settled in nicely. It's been SIX months now on what was to be a 'few weeks'. Guess he's not going anywhere anytime soon. I'm thankful for the extra cash and it really helps when as this Holiday, again, they had overnight guests (2 cars, 4 people) staying with them. I'm not sure if they are gone now, but it will impact the water, electricity bills. The extra cash will pay for the overage.
Off to Costly Co today to take advantage of coupon day. Hope that the Christmas Hoard of shoppers doesn't appear there. Hating the crowds and even on regular days, parking is terrible. Gotta get some necessities.
Happy Monday after Black Friday to all.
L4L, no, the other rep who works in my territory was in a car accident and broke her wrist. So I've had cover the entire thing by myself for the past few weeks. I'm looking forward to her being back, but I hope that doesn't mean that I have the opposite problem where I have hardly any hours again. crazy
Sorry about your heater, Ana! Hope the new one is installed soon tomorrow and works well.
Okay, off to sleep for another long day. Good night, everyone. sleep
Stopping to say good night. I was on the phone with my sister-in-law for about 45 minutes. It's been way too long since we've talked. It was so warm. But now it's way past my bedtime so I'll say good night and see you tomorrow. Looking forward to my BB pancakes that I missed this morning. Night.
