Fuzzy Language

The following list of phrases and their definitions might help you understand the fuzzy language of science and medicine. These special phrases are also applicable to anyone reading a PhD dissertation or academic paper.

"IT HAS LONG BEEN KNOWN"...
I didn't look up the original reference.

"A DEFINITE TREND IS EVIDENT"...
These data are practically meaningless.

"WHILE IT HAS NOT BEEN POSSIBLE TO PROVIDE DEFINITE ANSWERS
TO THE QUESTIONS"...
An unsuccessful experiment but I still hope to get it published.

"THREE OF THE SAMPLES WERE CHOSEN FOR DETAILED STUDY"...
The other results didn't make any sense.

"TYPICAL RESULTS ARE SHOWN"...
This is the prettiest graph.

"THESE RESULTS WILL BE IN A SUBSEQUENT REPORT"...
I might get around to this sometime, if pushed/funded.

"IN MY EXPERIENCE"...
Once.

"IN CASE AFTER CASE"...
Twice.

"IN A SERIES OF CASES"...
Thrice.

"IT IS BELIEVED THAT"...
I think.

"IT IS GENERALLY BELIEVED THAT"...
A couple of others think so, too.

"CORRECT WITHIN AN ORDER OF MAGNITUDE" ...
Wrong. Wrong. Wrong.

"ACCORDING TO STATISTICAL ANALYSIS"...
Rumor has it.

"A STATISTICALLY-ORIENTED PROJECTION OF THE SIGNIFICANCE
OF THESE FINDINGS"...
A really wild guess.

"A CAREFUL ANALYSIS OF OBTAINABLE DATA"...
Three pages of notes were obliterated when I knocked over a beer glass.

"IT IS CLEAR THAT MUCH ADDITIONAL WORK WILL BE REQUIRED
BEFORE A COMPLETE UNDERSTANDING OF THIS PHENOMENON OCCURS"...
I don't understand it....and I never will.

"AFTER ADDITIONAL STUDY BY MY COLLEAGUES"...
They don't understand it either.

"A HIGHLY SIGNIFICANT AREA FOR EXPLORATORY STUDY"...
A totally useless topic selected by my committee.

"IT IS HOPED THAT THIS STUDY WILL STIMULATE FURTHER INVESTIGATION IN THIS
FIELD"...
I am pleased to continue feeding you bull.

Why God never received tenure at any university...

1. He had only one major publication.

2. It was in Hebrew.

3. It had no references.

4. It wasn't published in a referred journal.

5. Some even doubt he wrote it himself.

6. It may be true that he created the world, but what has he done since then?

7. His cooperative efforts have been quite limited.

8. The scientific community has had a hard time replicating his results.

9. He never applied to the Ethics Board for permission to use human subjects.

10. When one experiment went awry he tried to cover it up by drowning the subjects.

11. When subjects didn't behave as predicted, he deleted them from the sample.

12. He rarely came to class, just told students to read the Book.

13. Some say he had his son teach the class.

14. He expelled his first two students for learning.

15. Although there were only ten requirements, most students failed his tests.

16. His office hours were infrequent and usually held on a mountaintop.

God's Leftovers

Seems God was just about done creating the universe, had a couple of left-over things left in his bag of creations, so he stopped by to visit Adam and Eve in the Garden. He told the couple that one of the things he had to give away was the ability to stand up and pee. "It's a very handy thing," God told the couple who he found hanging around under an apple tree. "I was wondering if either one of you wanted that ability." Adam popped a cork!! He jumped up and begged, "Oh, give that to me! I'd love to be able to do that! It seems the sort of thing a Man should do. Oh please, oh please, oh please, let me have that ability. I'd be so great! When I'm working in the garden or naming the animals, I could just let it rip, I'd be sooooo cool. Oh please, God, let it be me who you give that gift to, let me stand and pee, oh please........." On and on he went like an excited little boy (who had to pee ).

Eve just smiled and shook her head at the display. She told God that if Adam really wanted it so badly, and it sure seemed to be the sort of thing that would make him happy, she really wouldn't mind if Adam were the one given the ability to stand up and pee. And so it was. And it was...........well, good. "Fine," God said, looking back into his bag of left-over gifts. "What's left here? Oh yes, multiple orgasms..."

Good morning everyboomie. welcome

Welcome to the weekend! santadance

Today we never really got much of that 'plenty of sunshine' we were promised. taz

That prediction was probably cut off. It was supposed to say, "There will be plenty of sunshine in your secret garden, if you keep a smile in your heart." wink12

THAT would have been totally accurate for me. My secret garden was.....

So, it was still pretty cold outside and I didn't really want to got out in it, so I stripped the bed and started doing laundry, and then I did some vacuuming. By then it warmed up some, so I took the girls, and Beau to the park. lab

Later on I did my little exercise program. After measuring my waist, I just don't understand how my underwear will stretch that far. eek12

After that I had to keep my couch from floating off. That took 3 hours, which coincidentally is how long it takes to watch a football game rerun.woot

Have a happy day everyone.

lol12 Joe! Glad you were able to get the pups out. It was in the teens with windchill all day and I was out with friends. It was fun though even if it was chilly.

SpaceQ, welcome to the weekend.

Have a wonderful day everyone!

Glad you had fun with your dogs, Joe, and that you were able to keep your couch from floating away. lol12

Have a great Saturday, Space Quest.

Glad you had fun with your friends in spite of the cold, Ana. thumbsup12

It's late Friday night here. I'm especially glad the weekend is here, as things have been way too stressful at work lately. frown12 Everything is spread too thinly, as I'm still doing the work of two people, and I'm being blamed for things that are beyond my control. Too many rock and hard place situations where what my company wants and what the stores want and is feasible do not coincide. hardwall

Plus I've been sick all week but haven't been able to take any days off, as there aren't enough people to cover. At least I can get some rest over the next two days. Maybe play something light and fun to get my mind off of things, like Tales of Monkey Island. smile12 And spend some quality time with my kitties, of course. grin12

Hope everyone has a great Saturday. tree

Super Saturday ya'll puppy

I had a fun night with Seagy absolutely convinced she needed to sit on my head for a while, and Lil Soot growling menacingly at the corner of his cage. Think he was seeing ghosts.

Then up to make pancakes, bacon, and fried apples for the g'kids. They left to go to a basketball camp and I left to walk the dogs. It is a nice day out there. Blue skies, bright sun, a tad cool, but thank you, Jesus, very little wind.

Home to strip my bed, and now trying to get inspired for something quick and easy for supper as walking always wears me out, and changing the bed destroys my back (all the bending and twisting).

Ahhhhhhh, life happydance12

Long day. Nice little fire going. Boys are playing lego by the fire. Sadly, son is at the vet with Miss Spryte. I don't know for sure, but I don't think she is coming home. He will be devastated. sad

Thanks Midgy, Miss Spryte went over the rainbow bridge. It's the first time son has had to make that decision. We buried her in the front yard. Son had to hack through roots and rocks. He's gonna be sore in the morning.

I'm going to bed. Sweet dreams all sleep12

I'm off to sleep now, also. Good night, everyone. sleep12
