A Danish trilogy based on a series of novels:
The Keeper of Lost Causes (2013), The Absent One (2014), A Conspiracy of Faith (2016)
After homicide detective Carl Mørck's and his two partners are shot during a stake out, he's demoted to clearing up clerical errors in 20 years of closed cases. With his assistant Assad, he reopens those cases he believes were closed prematurely. These are dark stories, highlighting the worst in human nature.
Carl isn't the warmest person in fact he's a jerk. He has an ex-wife who wants him to leave her alone. Assad is the one who gets along with people.
The Keeper of Lost Causes (2013): The disappearance of a politician from a ferry boat, five years ago, was written of as a suicide by a lazy detective, even though her body was never found. Carl tells the man that if he is ever murdered he doesn't want him on the case. Gives you an idea of his people skills. The only witness to what happpend is the victim's younger brother who's suffering from mental illness and doesn't speak. While Carl and Assad are investigating the audience is shown whats happened to the kidnapped victim, in a series of flashbacks.
The Absent One (2014): After successfully solving the first case, against orders, Carl is now authorized to reopen cases of his choice and investigate them with Assad's help. He also gains a secretary, Rose, to do the paper work.
The murder of young twins is a closed case until Carl reopens it.
A Conspiracy of Faith (2016): A past case and a current case could point to a serial killer.
The film company has the rights to "The Purity of Vengeance" so a fourth film could be made. However, the author wants an American series based on the books to be made so books five and six won't be part of this series.

Does Carl's personality improve as the series goes?

I've only watched the first one. His boss says only his former partners could stand him. +

l4l - all i will say is - kinda like - he seems to care more than he lets on,
which they show in a highly unusual way i thought, as you go along.
i did not think i would like this series ,but i did ,and hope
they do the fourth real soon - lol

Just watched The Keeper of Lost Causes. Really enjoyed it. Loved the light humor they tucked in now and then.

I watched The Absent One (2014).
Carl should let Rose know he appreciates her coffee.
The first story has a happy ending. Second sad. So whats the third going to do? Also the second is more violent.

Finally got around to "A Christmas Horror Story". Fantastic. William Shatner was fun, the entire thing a surprise at the end and very good for a cold winter night. Thanks for the recommend.
