Christian knight trying to open a locked gate. Walkthrough says search totem for key, but the game won't let me search the totem, Bradwem just shrugs. Is there something I need to do first (missing from the walkthrough)?

You should have talked to the woman in the pen. Also,you have to exhaust all the dialogue with Lutisse and the black lord before checking the reindeer totem.

Then stand infront of the reindeer totem at the slave camp and just press spacebar.
