Now that I have my PC back I'm binge watching Dirk Gently Holistic Detective on BBC Amercia's web site. Before you watch it you should know the new Dirk Gently Show is nothing like the books. In fact it seems like his reluctant assistant Todd Brotzman (Elijah Wood) is actually the main character. Having met Tood apparently by accident, Dirk says he's now part of his case simply because he met him. And decides Todd is meant to be his assistant/best friend.

Dirk Gently was hired to solve a murder, by the victim before the murder took place. And insists that Todd is supposed to help.

In this series Dirk Gently (Samuel Barnett) is the only British character. The story is supposed to be set in the USA though its actually filmed in Canada.

Dirk and Todd have counterparts Bart Curlish and Ken. Despite the male sounding name Bart is a woman, who says she's a holistic assassin, whoever she kills was supposed to be her target. She claims she's never killed the wrong person. She's hunting for Dirk Gently because she dreamed she's to kill him. Ken's her version of Todd. Both Todd and Ken figure out all the weird stuff Dirk or Bart told them is true at roughly the same time. Half way through the series Bart has yet to lay eyes on Dirk. Apparently the universe is taking her the long way around to getting to Dirk. She mistook Ken for Dirk but didn't kill him when he said he wasn't Dirk. Otherwise every one else she encounters ends up dead at her hands.

Rapunzel the Corgi (Bentley) keeps showing up where the action is.
Dirk stole an unnamed black kitten from a murder scene. The bad guys are hunting both animals.

Too bad they aren't patterning it after the books. The Long Dark Tea-Time of the Soul is one of my favorites by Douglas Adams.

In the series when asked if he's solved any previous cases he mentions a sofa and Thor, who he says isn't as good looking as people think.

The first book is a combination of some of Adam's Doctor Who episodes rewritten to remove the Time Lords.

Plus a spin-off series that never quite made it. That's exactly why I liked the aforementioned second book featuring Dirk Gently, it's more focused on the potential direction that Adams wanted to take the series. It's truly unfortunate that he died so young and before completing the third book.
