OK guys, I finally got to the keep! I think the secret is...after you draw the keep symbol on the slate and drop it on the ground, leave the bubble and go clear to the end of the ice cave before you turn around and watch the monkey take the slate. Worked for me.
Good luck,
Jerry

I drew it and it was recognized the first time in all of the puzzles.

This is the least glitchy Myst game I have ever played.

OK, I'm stuck at the end. The symbol on the last pedestal is too far away and I can't see it to copy it down. Anyone know of a better picture.

Hello,
I figure those six valves on the 6 stuctures re-direct steam in different directions, but I cant figure out how to power up the selector buttons on the 2 large main pipes.I dont see a source of power anywhere. Can someone give me a hint.

Geo, you should have gotten a symbol for "heat" earlier--that might have something to do with all this....

You all are way out ahead of me. I just barely got the ice cracking.

I've been puttering about in the Great Shaft. Nice to get to know more about what's going on with Yeesha.

Geo,

SPOILERS...

You can leave the slate on the podium any time you need to climb something. When on the podium, the Bahro won't come and take it away.

Did you try the heat solution? It has a "thawing" effect on switches...

So I dont have to get the slate near the hut podium? I can just draw anywhere, like the cave, and leave it there?

Geo, if you notice the podiums, once you've marked the slate with the sign on that podium, it shows up on all of them, and all you have to do to go to one is to click on the sign on whichever podium you are near. So you can get to the one near the hut just by drawing the sign on it to the slate.

Does that make any sense... think

Phew! I have been going nuts climbing back to the place I THINK I should put the slate with the symbol I THINK is appropriate..but nothing is happening. Assuming a thaw comes from nature, where on earth should I try to put the slate???

KateVa,

Spoiler!

If you have the correct symbol, the Bahro must come to read it (i.e., drop the slate and back away) and bring the warmth. After he does, pick up the slate again in case you need to make it warm again.

TY Dadguy. Gotta tell you this poor Bahro is getting really tired of me right now. He stopped just scratching his head at me, and screamed. I have made interesting fog and spurts of steam in several places, so I guess I have the right symbol. Question still is, just where does this slate go! Tried the end of the pipes, the "button" spot on the two big pipes, even near the place I see the drawing (that was a great one to watch) but all of them seem to have no effect on the buttons and swiches. Perhaps I have missed something else..or is this timed?

Ok, I drew the symbol and dropped the plate. He looked at it threw up his hands as if he finally got it and there was a flash of light.I went to the bridge and all kinds of steam was coming up ahead.Good I thought, but I could not cross the bridge.About a minute later the steam stopped and I was able to cross the bridge. When I went to the switches nothing had changed. No power.I am getting frustrated.A game is no fun when you get frustrated.

edit- I think kateva and I are having the same problem. Also I think you assume we know more than we do about what to do.We need a push not a hint.

Geo! Great news! I have been carrying the slate all over and dropping it in all the likely places I could find. One of them, dropping it by the frozen "grid" (the pipes in the pond) in the middle, has popped up the buttons on the big pipe on the left!!! Onward!!!

I cannot get the slate in my possesion from any pedistal other than the one in the cave.Of course I cant take it very far from there. If I leave it on the pedistal in the cave I cannot get it from any other pedistals.Perhaps I have a glitch.

Geo, when you mark a symbol on the slate and drop it, the bahro picks it up and puts it on the pedestal. At that point, the symbol you drew on the slate should be marked on the pedestal, and you can travel there from any other pedestal by clicking on that mark. If you have already gotten the steam to rise, you should have at least two symbols on the pedestals...

OK, have to edit that last post. Doesnt seem to matter where I drop the slate-the Bahro warms things up and leaves the slate behind. I quickly go back over the slate to pick it up and then "park" it (just carry the slate to the pedestal by the main hut Geo) on the pedestal. When the steam stops I run back to the pedestal and repeat the process. Playing with bubbles now!

OK, Geo and KateVA.

There are two items that you have asked about. Let me try to go over them.

1.) Moving slates up ladders... Yes, you can't carry the slate up that ladder. So, you have to get the Bahro to carry it for you. To do this all you have to do is draw the symbol from the pedestal that is at the top of the ladder on the slate and drop it. Back away and the Bahro will pick it up and put it on the pedestal that has that symbol. This will also add a NEW link spot on the home pedestal (pedestal #1) so you can always get to the new area from pedestal #1. You'll use this many times in the game to travel to other pedestals that are unreachable. Then just walk up the ladder and pick up the slate from the pedestal at the top of the ladder (pedestal #2 in this Age).

2. The steam and heat! When you make the heat symbol and drop the slate, back away... the Bahro will appear and will turn on the geysers and steam. Pick up the slate so you can use it again without chasing it back to pedestal #1. You do NOT have to leave the slate anywhere to have the heat "work on" a certain switch... it just has to be turned on. So, when you need the steam and heat, just call the symbol again (it will be on your "menu" of symbols) and it will be drawn again. Do this again near the switches that are frozen to "thaw" them for approximately 90 seconds. Quickley set the switch positions where you want them before the steam stops. If you run out of time, call him again for another 90 seconds.

Having fun!

Dadguy

How the heck do you back up? I always have to drop slate, turn around, and advance before I hear the Bahro sound. By the time I turn back around he disappears.

I'm having some problems manuvering in this game. Uru and Myst IV were very smooth. In this game I seem to be going too fast and have problems turning. Any advice?

Thanks.
Jayne

Jayne, I know what you mean.

Here is a clue for "backing up" which is the best way to drop the slate... you get to watch the Bahro!

I found that the SCROLLer button, if you have one, can be "clicked" like a button. If you click it down instead of "rolling" it, you will back up for as long as you hold the button down.

Try it!

You can always reach over and use the DOWN arrow or the S button to back up also.

As far as maneuvering, it all depends on which "mode" you use. I like the freedom of Advanced Full motion, but the Classic and Classic+ are simpler but give less options. As far as speed, try slowing the mouse sensitivity. Keep trying till you have the best combo.

Cool game!

Dadguy
