Politics is supposed to be the second oldest profession. I have come to realize that it bears a very close resemblance to the first.

RONALD REAGAN

`````````````````
Laws Of Combat
Murphy's laws of combat operations...
1. Friendly fire - isn't.
2. Recoilless rifles - aren't.
3. Suppressive fires - won't.
4. You are not Superman; Marines and fighter pilots take note.
5. A sucking chest wound is Nature's way of telling you to slow down.
6. If it's stupid but it works, it isn't stupid.
7. Try to look unimportant; the enemy may be low on ammo and not want to waste a bullet on you.
8. If at first you don't succeed, call in an air strike.
9. If you are forward of your position, your artillery will fall short.
10. Never share a foxhole with anyone braver than yourself.
11. Never go to bed with anyone crazier than yourself.
12. Never forget that your weapon was made by the lowest bidder.
13. If your attack is going really well, it's an ambush.
14. The enemy diversion you're ignoring is their main attack.
15. The enemy invariably attacks on two occasions: when they're ready; when you're not.
16. No OPLAN ever survives initial contact.
17. There is no such thing as a perfect plan.
18. Five second fuses always burn three seconds.
19. There is no such thing as an atheist in a foxhole.
20. A retreating enemy is probably just falling back and regrouping.
21. The important things are always simple; the simple are always hard.
22. The easy way is always mined.
23. Teamwork is essential; it gives the enemy other people to shoot at.
24. Don't look conspicuous; it draws fire. For this reason, it is not at all uncommon for aircraft carriers to be known as bomb magnets.
25. Never draw fire; it irritates everyone around you.
26. If you are short of everything but the enemy, you are in the combat zone.
27. When you have secured the area, make sure the enemy knows it too.
28. Incoming fire has the right of way.
29. No combat ready unit has ever passed inspection.
30. No inspection ready unit has ever passed combat.
31. If the enemy is within range, so are you.
32. The only thing more accurate than incoming enemy fire is incoming friendly fire.
33. Things which must be shipped together as a set, aren't.
34. Things that must work together, can't be carried to the field that way.
35. Radios will fail as soon as you need fire support. (Corollary: Radar tends to fail at night and in bad weather, and especially during both.)
36. Anything you do can get you killed, including nothing.
37. Make it too tough for the enemy to get in, and you won't be able to get out.
38. Tracers work both ways.
39. If you take more than your fair share of objectives, you will get more than your fair share of objectives to take.
40. When both sides are convinced they're about to lose, they're both right.
41. Professional soldiers are predictable; the world is full of dangerous amateurs.
43. Military Intelligence is a contradiction.
44. Fortify your front; you'll get your rear shot up.
46. Weather ain't neutral.
47. If you can't remember, the Claymore is pointed towards you.
48. Air defence motto: shoot 'em down; sort 'em out on the ground.
49. 'Flies high, it dies; low and slow, it'll go.
50. The Cavalry doesn't always come to the rescue.
51. Napalm is an area support weapon.
52. Mines are equal opportunity weapons.
53. B-52s are the ultimate close support weapon.
54. Sniper's motto: reach out and touch someone.
55. Killing for peace is like screwing for virginity.
56. The one item you need is always in short supply.
57. Interchangeable parts aren't.
58. It's not the one with your name on it; it's the one addressed "to whom it may concern" you've got to think about.
59. When in doubt, empty your magazine.
60. The side with the simplest uniforms wins.
61. Combat will occur on the ground between two adjoining maps.
62. If the Platoon Sergeant can see you, so can the enemy.
63. Never stand when you can sit, never sit when you can lie down, never stay awake when you can sleep.
64. The most dangerous thing in the world is a Second Lieutenant with a map and a compass.
65. Exceptions prove the rule, and destroy the battle plan.
66. Everything always works in your HQ, everything always fails in the Colonel's HQ.
67. The enemy never watches until you make a mistake.
68. One enemy soldier is never enough, but two is entirely too many.
69. A clean (and dry) set of BDU's is a magnet for mud and rain.
70. The worse the weather, the more you are required to be out in it.
71. Whenever you have plenty of ammo, you never miss. Whenever you are low on ammo, you can't hit the broad side of a barn.
71. The more a weapon costs, the farther you will have to send it away to be repaired.
72. The complexity of a weapon is inversely proportional to the IQ of the
weapon's operator.
73. Field experience is something you don't get until just after y u need it.
74. No matter which way you have to march, its always uphill.
75. If enough data is collected, a board of inquiry can prove anything.
Thumping Good Thursday ya'll puppy
We had storms and fractious dogs all night last night. Lil Soot started the night in his kennel, moved to my bed (and on and off my bed about 50 times), back to his cage, then down to the kitchen. He settled on his pad in the corner so I left him there and went back to bed and Finally to sleep.
Woot! However, when I got up I found out the rest of the story. Son came to the kitchen to get something to drink. Lil Soot followed him to his room, jumped in bed with him, and proceded to "wa wa" at him all night. rotfl
Silly puppy dog!
Today is bread making day hamster
Joe, net problems are the pits! Sorry. Hope they are resolved soon.
Midgy, did your day off change or did you just get an extra morning off?
Ana, have fun!
Doc, do you have anything fun to do while you are at dialysis? Thinking of you.
Gerry, wavegirl
Connie, how's life?
Happy gaming, Gail wave
It's another trip to Home Depot for me today. Yesterday I managed to cram into my little Mitsubishi Eclipse, 46 six foot fence slats, 6 2x4's, and all the huge boxes of nails, more nails, bolts, washers, etc. to construct 2 panels of my soon-to-be new fence that's replacing my neighbor's falling down fence which he really hasn't shown any sign of fixing over the last 38 years I've lived next to him. Nice guy, but just a hermit type. Inherited his little house, barn, crumbling 30 foot fishing boat, granny flat property and has done exactly NOTHING to keep up any of it.
Boat is now about 1/2 the size, rotted into a pile. The critters love it. Barn, looks like Noah's Ark with it's recently collapsed roof, low in the center and sticking up a both ends, and walls bowing out at a 30 degree angle at last check. A few more rain storms and the entire thing will just collapse into a pile. It was a NICE huge barn way back, but he never re-roofed it and the roof is bare wood. His dad was a master woodworker and used the barn as his workshop. Sad to watch the degeneration.
His house, ditto on the roof. It's a combo of rotted shingles, no shingles, thin clear rolled plastic, bricks and other rocks holding down the plastic, etc. You get the picture. The plastic sheeting rots in the sun and blows over into my yard in small pieces. I can't imagine what the inside of the house looks like now. Last time I was in there was about 10 years ago when I smelled strong gas leaking. He let me in and it was his stove. Finally got him to call the gas company and they 'red tagged' it. Never had a stove after that. Ditto on the water heater. AND he did manage to install a new toilet about that time. He'd been without a flushing toilet for years so he says. Rest of house cluttered like a hoarder, but he's not. Just stuff from his mom and dad from years ago that was all over the place. 800 foot house, 2 tiny bedrooms, tiny living/kitchen, narrow hall. TINY everything. He never lets anyone in. Windows are all broken, boarded, tinfoiled, shredded screens. Looks abandoned but isn't. Strange guy, but still, he's a good neighbor in most ways.
So the fence is his, not shared, We have been propping it up on both sides as it leans one way or another. Been quite a fun thing. But with the recent high winds, a 12 foot section just fell over. Wooden post cracked off at the ground and there it stays. I put up wire for kitty protection from roving dogs, and neighbor propped up the boards against the wire. They promptly fell down again within the week when another storm went through.
He called a few days back and said he was going to re-repair that section and I said don't bother, I'm going to put up a new fence on my side. He offered to help pay, but I declined. I don't want to share the responsibility. I'm just butting my new fence up against his on my side of the line IF I can find it. Put up some nice 'cord' from end to end and can see the line. Very fun to see the fence going in and out of that 'line' for 87ish feet. Sometimes 2 feet leaning my way and then his and then most of it is rotted and barely hanging on.
So the project today is to get some 4x4 posts. Couldn't fit them in my little car yesterday. So posts and more fence slats and then the fun starts. Tenant/friend is going to help me put 8 foot sections together. He's not thrilled but I'm baiting him with a free steak dinner on Sunday.
It will take 11 panels and I'm doing 3 at a time. It's all I/We can handle. He's not the outdoor type, hates sun, etc. Still, he's really a good friend and is very good at the things I beg him to do for/with me. Yup. I appreciate him totally.
In a few weeks, if all goes as planned, I will have a wonderful new 6' fence and the neighbor can decide if he wants to pull down his rotting one, or just leave it against mine. I really don't care. My guess (actually not a guess) is he will do nothing to his side. His is 5' and mine will completely cover it so I won't see it anyway. AND he's trying to sell his property so the new owners (IF) he ever sells will have the pleasure of removing the fence and demolishing ALL the buildings and getting rid of that rotting boat. Did I mention it's THIRTY feet long? An old 2 level fishing boat his dad towed in thinking he was going to fix it. It was a running joke between me and the Mom over there for years.
I'm going to have to get out my camera and remember how to upload photos so you all can see what I'm talking about. Awesome yukky stuff.
Off to Home Depot for more wood. Hopefully the 24 year old, non high school grad kid that helped me get the wood into my car won't be there. He's an unhappy kiddo. Had a time getting him to follow my 'packing' instructions to get all that stuff into my sports car. I knew it would fit, and he didn't have a clue. He was surprised that I knew it would all go in, and he was careful to make sure the sheet stayed over the leather seats to protect them . I appreciated that. I tipped him 5 bucks (not much I know) but it was only 5 minutes of work and he didn't seem happy with that either. He said, "This is the worst job I've ever had", speaking of working for the Depot. I didn't ask why, but I'd guess he just hates working. Seemed like a nice kiddo though. Strong, capable, I wonder if he would like to do yardwork? rotfl
So I went to Home Depot, managed to flag down a few 'workers' to find things and cut bands off of piles of wood, etc. They were very helpful. But on the way in, I ran smack dab into the kid from yesterday who wasn't happy with my meager tip. I made small talk with the gal helping me find a cart and said something directly to him about being back. He didn't say a word. Guess he's not thankful for some extra cash. Granted, 5 bucks isn't much these days, but I barely had any cash and I figured half of the minimum hourly wage out here would be more than enough. Nope. Guess he REALLY is unhappy with his job like he said. Ha.
So in the parking lot, I was asked if I needed help in constructing a fence, Nope. Thanks nope. Then a guy wanted to help me load the car, no thanks. Then another guy walked up and the first one walked away. Second guy didn't take no for an answer. Geez. He just started grabbing wood and loading the car. Actually I did need help, my muscles were screaming. So he proceeded to tell me all about his entire life, working on a fishing boat, losing h is wife and kid to a hit and run driver that left HIM with 15 pins in his back. I had to ENDURE looking at the scar all the way to his butt. What fun. Nice guy though. Helped out a lot, didn't ask for anything and said that since I was a 'woman' I needed help. Guess he's right, I just don't ask and can do it myself but shouldn't lift all that stuff. Pain pills later and Advil.
Anyway, I dug in my wallet and found another 5 bucks and he was more than thankful, almost didn't take it, but at least he worked for it and said thanks, unlike the kid from yesterday. Takes all kinds of people to make the world. Interesting. joy
Sorta, I do most of my shopping at Menards with Lowes and Home Depot secondary and when I had my shoulder surgeries I asked them to help load my 40 pound bags of bird food and dog food. If I tried to tip them they insisted it was their pleasure and refused it. I used to have shove it in a shirt pocket or jacket of theirs to get my way. What a shame someone gets angry about a tip. It is not a tipped wage they earn like wait staff or bartenders where they only get 4 dollars and rely on tips. Shame on him!
