For those who like mind-boggling point & click exploration games with brilliant artwork, I recommend any of Mateusz Skutnik's Submachine series, but especially - Submachine 10 - which is a pay-for, although his latest - Submachine Universe - is available as a free download here...

P.S. - his Daymare Town and 10 gnomes series (some pay-for or free play online) are equally difficult.

Machinarium, like other games by Amanita Design, is story-driven with quirky characters, whereas Submachine is more esoteric and deep as you probably discovered. An acquired taste perhaps and can be frustrating at times, but there are text and video walkthroughs available... giyf.

Spoiler alert:
Chief... I noticed that you wrote a couple of walkthroughs for the first Submachine games ten years ago, so the latest one should be a doddle for you to complete!
