...for an older motherboard. I have a gigabyte series S motherboard and the nVidia GeForce card went out on me. I had the 9600gt card. I need a new card for this motherboard. Any suggestions? I am told I need pci-e connection.

I remember this computer, but I don't remember what size power supply you have. Also, do you know if it's PCI-E 2.0 or X8 or X16? Most of them are backwards compatible...

650 watt, 2.0 standard running at x16. Just to let you know, the driver on the old card kept going out and recovering randomly. Hoping for something better this time. We usually go to Fry's for stuff, but if it isn't available there, I can go online. Am using my granddaughter!s iPad right now.

What I'm finding is that you are somewhat limited by that motherboard. You have enough power to get a much better video card, but the PCI-E is limited to cards like the nvidia 700 series.

You might go to websites like Newegg or Amazon and limit the search to that interface and see what you can find.

With the 3.0 standard, the options are MUCH better. I'd suggest Newegg to start - search by the 3.0 standard and see what comes up. You can filter them any way you want.

Pci-e 3.0 cards are backward compatible with the 2.0 standard , so , the only real limitation is your power supply & budget . Link

True enough . To satisfy my curiosity , I went to Newegg , & priced new video cards from both Team Green (Nvidia) , & Team Red (AMD) . The cheapest Nvidia card I could find , that wasn't exactly low end (explanation later) , a GTX 970 , was approximately $350 . Conversely , a 4GB AMD RX470 was just under $200 . The 8GB variants of the RX 470 , & it's "brother" , the RX 480 , were approximately $40-$60 more . The Nvidia GTX 970 requires a minimum 500 watt PSU . Conversely , the RX470 I pointed to earlier , requires a PSU of just 450 watts .

Make no mistake , a 650 watt PSU is nothing to sneeze at ! On the other hand , there are more components drawing power (CPU , case fans , internal/external hdd's, etc) , than just a video card . It's better to have too much power , & not over tax your psu , that to not have enough power , & push your psu too hard .

Now , to my explanation . I did find some of the lower Nvidia GTX 9 series (all 7 series cards were sold out) , such as a GTX 950 & 960 , that were approximately $160 . Price is right , however , these 950 & 960 series cards , only ran on a 192 bit memory bus , as opposed to the AMD cards mentioned (a 265 bit memory bus) , & the GTX 970 ( a 256 bit memory bus as well) . The wider the memory bus , the better . The lower bit memory bus cards (like the 192 bit GTX 950 & 960) would be great for general computing , & that's about all .
