I've arrived on Mechanical Island. This is not a good place for me as I'm not mechanically inclined. To prove my point...I'm in front of the fortress rotation simulator in Achenar's bedroom. I'm suppose to practice manipulating the levers I think to N,S,E and W. When I move the left lever I hear one clunk and the red gage on the right goes to it's top. When I move the right lever nothing happens. I hope someone can explain how this works so I can understand it.

Okay - total spoiler:

Close the ramp that gives you access to the basement, and take the elevator up. Notice that the elevator has three controls: An UP button, a DOWN button, and a rectangular button in between. When you get to the upper level, press the middle button and step off the elevator. The middle button is a delay timer, and sends the elevator down partway. Turn around and face the elevator shaft. The actual rotation controls are located on top of the elevator car.

When you begin, the fortress exit is facing South. You will need to turn it East, and exit to visit a small island. Then North to visit a small island, finally back to South. There is nothing to visit in the West.

I fooled with those levers and the elevator went up two more levels. I came down one and I'm now in a strange room with a telescope looking out at water. There's also a wooden bird in here. Question, am I suppose to be here? If so what am I suppose to do? and where do I go from here?

The building you are in has three levels accessed by the elevator. You're on the bottom one which has two rooms, each with a hidden room. The elevator takes you to that bottom level and to the third level. On the second level you cannot get off but must send the elevator there while you remain on the third level to activate the controls on top of the elevator to rotate the island.

There are three outer islands. The one you came in on and crossed from to get to where you are now. The other two outer islands contain clues to how to get back to MYST Island and the Library.

Using the controls on top of the elevator and by using the sounds they emit when the Island stops turning you are supposed to figure out which outer Island (whether with a clue or with the "entering the age" location) is lined up with the Island's outside walkway.

Use the controls to turn the Island, go to the lower level (where you are now) and roam the halls to find the outer walkway until you have rotated and walked to the two clue Islands. Then rotate so you can get back to where you started and get out of there.

Don't forget the Page(s) before you leave. laugh

I think she's playing the original. I can still provide ultra-spoiler if needed. "Push the left lever up; push the right lever up and count to three ---- etc." if you need it.

If you only just now found the room with the telescope, then perhaps you did not find the simulator.

The gadget in the basement (down the ramp) is a total red herring; something to throw gamers off the track. It is MEANINGLESS. The simulator is in the other bedroom (Achenaar's if I get the names correct) - the 'messy' or 'crude' one. The telescope is in the more refined (Sirrus) chamber.

BillyBob also pointed out that there are hidden rooms beyond each bedroom. In the hidden rooms are the pages you seek. There is no point in returning to Myst Island until you have found one of the pages.

Oh - and if you are patient (and you are, or you wouldn't stick with Myst, be sure to come down to the telescope and peek through it after you succeed in rotating the island. It's not essential; just something most players miss. (Or is that spelled myss? laugh )

TallyHo......are you sure? If you don't do the "gadget" at the bottom of the ramp you will not get the door to the elevator on the proper side of the elevator "tube" so you can enter it. laugh laugh
