Game introductions -- often a cut scene, sometimes mainly narration, sometimes interactive or including a tutorial, but before you have full control over what you do in the game.
Which game introductions do you remember the best?
Which are your favorites?
Here are some examples -- all games I played in my first two years of adventure gaming...
Grim Fandango (1998) -- One of the best. Introduces you to Manny. What a surprise when he took off his working shoes...
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XBuMtIpVlq8Secret of Monkey Island (1990) -- The mountain/volcano with the music at night. Nothing fancy, but that particular mountain and music are symbolic for those who enjoyed the original version of the game.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ySmLlHTV5rUMyst (1993) -- Falling into the mysterious starry expanse. Myst fans will remember the closing phrase "perhaps the ending has not yet been written."
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D30r0iRH73QIndiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis (1992) -- An extended, partially interactive introduction where Indy searches various rooms in the museum for a statuette. He falls through the floor numerous times and the credits display while he recovers.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nMSDHryYsb47th Guest (1992) -- Starts with the picture of the house, then tells the story of Stauf's rise to power. Less scary than corny, just like the rest of the game. The music is great.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=45Z-Q5KVTyIFaust (1999) -- I had no idea what this introduction was about the first time I played the game.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3sLZytieiz0While I was playing, I had no idea I was playing as Marcellus Faust. As with many 1st person games that show your player character during cut scenes, I didn't understand that that was my character in the cut scene and thought it was somebody else.
Atlantis: The Lost Tales (1997) -- Flying to Atlantis in the air ship. (I loved those air ships)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ASN_elfBUrsArthur's Knights (2000) -- Two introductions -- one partially interactive, before the pageboy character chooses the red or white book, another after. The intros to Bradwen's stories are pretty much the same whether you choose the red book to play as the Celtic knight (around 5:34 into the video)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tc-_RiXXlHIor the white book to play as the Christian knight (around 5:12 into the video)
