Until someone more techie comes along... no your router needs to be wifi capable\
\A wireless router is a device that performs the functions of a router and also includes the functions of a wireless access point. It is used to provide access to the Internet or a private computer network.

Mostly what Winfrey said... If your router has wireless capabilities, then yes, you could have WiFi service. If your router does not, then it cannot broadcast a wireless signal through your house.
What kind of phone are you talking about? If it's something like a Magic Jack, you can use them either wireless or plugged in to your computer via USB. I have one of each.

Ah, I see. Smart phones can connect to the internet if you have WiFi access. You can be somewhere that provides free WiFi and connect to the internet on the phone. Or if you have a wireless router in your home, you can connect to the internet on the phone in your own home.
Your friend is mistaken in thinking you automatically have WiFi in your home just because you have internet service. You must have a router that supports WiFi and broadcasts the WiFi signal throughout your house. A WiFi password would be the one on your WiFi router or you would reset it via the manufacturer's website.

Yes, it would also go for a tablet. I connect my Surface tablet through my WiFi.
You might just take a look at your router and see if it has any info on it. Usually a WiFi password is right on the router somewhere. Your friend doesn't seem to understand the difference between internet service and having the hardware (a WiFi capable router) to be able to broadcast a WiFi signal through your house! And you are correct in that you do not need a password to access your internet because you are using an ethernet cable (looks sort of like a telephone jack) plugged into the back of your computer... in other words a wired connection.
