You should use ScummVM to play The Dig on anything later than Windows 95/98/ME.

These are the files and folder you'll need to copy from the game CD to a folder on your hard drive:
http://wiki.scummvm.org/index.php/Datafiles#Dig.2C_The
Quote:
VIDEO folder
DIG.LA0
DIG.LA1
DIGMUSIC.BUN
DIGVOICE.BUN
LANGUAGE.BND (Non-English versions)

After copying the files to the folder on your hard drive, start ScummVM and point it at the folder where you put The Dig files (use the Add Game button in the ScummVM menu). You'll be able to start The Dig from the ScummVM menu.

If you don't already have ScummVM installed, you can get it here
http://scummvm.org/frs/scummvm/1.9.0/scummvm-1.9.0.2-win32.exe

Hi Jenny100

Thanks for the info on the game The dig, I will go to the web site you
Suggested and see if I can retrieve that file and let you know what happens
I am playing the game at the moment minus sound, and it is not as much fun.

Yes. I realise it's a "sound only" problem, Bluto, but the music in The Dig is just too good to be without !! laugh
That's the reason I mentioned the game being available at GOG if you couldn't get your current copy working fully smile

Hi again Jenny100

I don't fully understand the process you are trying to explain
Being as how I have never done this before
Ok here is what I have done so far.
I went on line with my windows xp system and down loaded the scummVM exe file
To the system it's in a directory I called scumm. now I put the game cd in the
Drive then drag and drop the scumm files into the directory of the dig game files
Then what?
I will probably need step by step Instructions to accomplish this task
Thank you.

Hi Bluto, you don't put the ScummVm files into The Dig files; you should keep the two programs separate.

Here are some instructions for ScummVM which may help you:

How to use ScummVM

And here's the instructions from the ScummVM website.

Download the scummvm-1.9.0.2-win32.exe file from
http://scummvm.org/frs/scummvm/1.9.0/scummvm-1.9.0.2-win32.exe

Double-click the scummvm-1.9.0.2-win32.exe
to install it (assuming it isn't already installed).

Stick The Dig CD in your CD/DVD drive.

Make a folder on your hard drive, for example C:\Games\TheDig
Copy the following files from the Dig CD to the C:\Games\TheDig folder:
DIG.LA0
DIG.LA1
DIGMUSIC.BUN
DIGVOICE.BUN
Copy the following folder (and all its contents) from the Dig CD to the C:\Games\TheDig folder:
VIDEO

Take the CD out of the CD/DVD drive.
Start ScummVM by double-clicking the desktop shortcut the installer made. If the installer didn't make a shortcut, brows to the folder where ScummVM installed and create a desktop shortcut (right-click --> Create shortcut) from the scummvm.exe file.

When you double-click the ScummVM shortcut (or the scummvm.exe file), you should see a button on the right side of the window for "Add Game..." Click that "Add Game" button and browse to the folder where you copied The Dig files. Highlight the folder and click "Choose". If you've copied files correctly, ScummVM should identify the game as
ID: dig
Name: The Dig

Click OK.
The game should now be selectable from the ScummVM menu. Highlight The Dig and click Start to start the game.

If you want to edit default settings, like Windows size or fullscreen, choose Options from the ScummVM menu before starting the game. I have mine set to play in a 3x window. F5 gets you out of the game back to the menu.

Glad to hear you figured it out.
ScummVM is really a lot easier to use than DOSBox -- ScummVM doesn't require any DOS knowledge, just knowledge to copy/paste and browse to a folder in Windows.
ScummVM also supports some Windows 95/98 games, which DOSBox will not.

Hi Jenny100

The game seems to be running ok, the only problem I seem to be having now
Is quitting the game, or getting out of the game the F1 key is suppose to
return you to the main menu but it's not doing that any more and you are
Suppose to save games from the main menu the only way I am able to leave the
Game is Ctrl+ Alt + Del how did you solve this problem.

Use F5 not F1.
At least F5 is what brings up the menu for me.

The dig is running quite good now by way of scumm.exe I
Also have a 2nd game called Prisoner Of Ice Have you heard
Of it? from I-Motion and I believe it is a dos game also
Do you thing I will also run by way of Scumm.exe.
It looks like a fun game to play.
I though I would ask you this before I tried to install it.

Thank You

Bluto

Yes I've heard of Prisoner of Ice.
But it's not on ScummVM's compatibility list.
I think it would have to be run in DOSBox.

Windows XP doesn't have real DOS.
That's why you have to use an emulator like DOSBox, which tricks the game into thinking it's on a DOS computer. Even if you got it running, it wouldn't have sound.
A synopsis of what you do to install
  • Download the Windows 32 DOSBox installer from
    https://www.dosbox.com/download.php?main=1
  • If you want to use DOSBox on a different computer that's not on Internet, copy the installer to USB drive to transfer it. But DOSBox will work on modern computers so it just depends on what computer you want to play your games on.
  • Install DOSBox -- you can instruct it where to install during the installation.
  • Start DOSBox -- you will see what looks like a command prompt
  • Type in the mount commands for your CD drive if you're using one
  • Install the game as if you were using DOS.
  • Play the game as if you were playing it on DOS.

It might be easier for you to use a FrontEnd like D-Fend Reloaded (also downloadable from the above webpage), but I've never used one myself. A DOSBox FrontEnd like D-Fend Reloaded would give you a graphic user interface for DOSBox.

If your game is on CD, you have to either mount the CD drive in DOSBox or make a disc image of the CD and use imgmount command to mount the CD image.

Mount commands are described here
https://www.dosbox.com/wiki/MOUNT

It might help to check out these Guides at VOGONS

60 Seconds Guide
https://www.vogons.org/viewtopic.php?f=39&t=8933

Pictorial Guide
https://www.vogons.org/viewtopic.php?f=39&t=2502

As you can see, using DOSBox is a lot more involved than using ScummVM. But DOSBox is able to play a wider variety of DOS games than ScummVM.

If you're interested in DOS games -- especially those that don't get a re-release and aren't supported by ScummVM or one of the
*** installers at sierrahelp.com *** -- then it's probably worth the effort to either learn DOSBox or learn a FrontEnd for it.

You might check some of the How-To's for D-Fend Reloaded on ***YouTube***.

Here are a text instructions that include how to make D-Fend Reloaded use your CD drive
http://www.computertechplace.com/easy-way-to-play-dos-games-with-d-fend-reloaded/

On C: drive,Low is not doing what he is suppose to in some places and
According to the walkthrough the wrong color rod are in the wrong place
The first one near the sparking wire is the wrong color,And in some places
He doesn't do what he suppose to do do you know of any of the other GB are
