The original version of Riddle of the Sphinx (version 1.0) had 3 CD's and was published by Dreamcatcher in year 2000. The 1.01 patch is for this version, which is the version Robert Gault posted about.
Riddle of the Sphinx was re-issued on a single CD. The re-release was version 1.1 (there may also have been later versions). You wouldn't want to use the 1.01 patch with anything but the original 1.0 version. Even if the patch doesn't give a "wrong version" error, the game might very well end up calling for a CD2 and CD3 that you don't have, because the original version required CD swapping. The single CD version was often sold at discount in places like Walmart in tiny little cardboard holders, barely large enough to contain the CD case.
The original version from 2000 shipped with QuickTime 4.12, but often worked better with QuickTime 3.02. Some of the glitches that happened with QuickTime 4.12 include objects being solid black instead of normal colored. In some cases it was possible to tweak QuickTime 4.12 to behave itself. The riddleofthesphinx.com website used to have a useful FAQ on tweaking QuickTime, which is now archived
***here***. As a last resort they recommend uninstalling QuickTime 4.12 and reinstalling QuickTime 3.02.

The 1.02 patch on that archived page is for Mac OS 8.5 through the latest version of OS 9 -- not compatible with current Macs.

Do not use the 1.01 patch if you have the single CD reissue version of the game. The single CD version is already a later version than what the 1.01 patch patches to.

Saved games are not compatible between version 1.01 and version 1.1.
If you have a single CD version, it is a reissue and seems to be what most people have.
If you have the 3-CD version, take Robert Gault's advice re which QuickTime to use. I've only run the original version in Windows 98, using the v1.01 patch and QuickTime 3.02 (because QuickTime 4.12 was giving me the black object problem among others).
