I have Windows 10. I also have this game. I tried to play it and it worked for a little bit and then stopped. Am I out of luck playing it? I love Egypitan games and I never finished this one. :(

Since you are having technical problems with the game, I have moved your post over to Glitches to see if someone can give you some advice about this game and Windows 10.

Do you have a physical or digital copy of the game ? Also , a brief listing of your computer's specs would help some .

Apparently there is a way but how much tweaking is involved is unclear to me. There is a listing on eBay here from a seller who tweaks older games, and he says it supports Windows 10.

I have the CD Rom. As for the specs I'm no computer guru. What are you referring to?

He is talking about your computer specs such as operating system (which you already said was Windows 10), RAM, video card etc. However, I doubt any of those will be relevant as the issue is probably more to do with Windows 10. As Marian said, there is probably some tweaking to do to get it to run on a new operating system.

Have you tried running in compatibility mode?

Once again, weeds are my life!

I expect it's a QuickTime problem.
Unfortunately I've never had much luck with solving QuickTime problems.

Years ago when I played I had to play in compatibility mode and it ran fine. You should try that too. Good luck!

There were some patches for the CD version of Riddle of the Sphinx which may or may not help. There is still a 1.01 patch @ http://patches-scrolls.de/patch/3436/7/29908

I don't have Win10 but have data about the game with WinXP. Most problems were with QuickTime and the specific version of QT is important. I'm not sure what version would be current for Win10.

There are problems with early versions of this game, WinXP, and versions of QuickTime more recent than that on the CDs.
ROTS 1.00 does not like QT7.41 and won't play.
ROTS1.01 will play with QT6.52 but some of the colors are off. To correct this, you must turn off DirectDraw options in the QT Video settings.
ROTS1.01 does not like QT7.41 and displays red on black crosses when images can't be shown.
ROTS1.01 will work with QT3.02 but music does not play correctly.
Best results are playing ROTS1.01 under Win98SE.
!!!!!
With WinXP SP3, set QuickTime 7.7.6 audio and video for Safe Mode.

I remember having Quicktime-related problems with this game in Windows 98 and Windows XP, but currently on Windows 7 x64 the game runs fine for me with the latest Quicktime 7.

The original version of Riddle of the Sphinx (version 1.0) had 3 CD's and was published by Dreamcatcher in year 2000. The 1.01 patch is for this version, which is the version Robert Gault posted about.

Riddle of the Sphinx was re-issued on a single CD. The re-release was version 1.1 (there may also have been later versions). You wouldn't want to use the 1.01 patch with anything but the original 1.0 version. Even if the patch doesn't give a "wrong version" error, the game might very well end up calling for a CD2 and CD3 that you don't have, because the original version required CD swapping. The single CD version was often sold at discount in places like Walmart in tiny little cardboard holders, barely large enough to contain the CD case.

The original version from 2000 shipped with QuickTime 4.12, but often worked better with QuickTime 3.02. Some of the glitches that happened with QuickTime 4.12 include objects being solid black instead of normal colored. In some cases it was possible to tweak QuickTime 4.12 to behave itself. The riddleofthesphinx.com website used to have a useful FAQ on tweaking QuickTime, which is now archived ***here***. As a last resort they recommend uninstalling QuickTime 4.12 and reinstalling QuickTime 3.02.

For a list of what the version 1.01 patch was supposed to fix, check ***here***.
The 1.02 patch on that archived page is for Mac OS 8.5 through the latest version of OS 9 -- not compatible with current Macs.

Do not use the 1.01 patch if you have the single CD reissue version of the game. The single CD version is already a later version than what the 1.01 patch patches to.

Saved games are not compatible between version 1.01 and version 1.1.

If you have a single CD version, it is a reissue and seems to be what most people have.

If you have the 3-CD version, take Robert Gault's advice re which QuickTime to use. I've only run the original version in Windows 98, using the v1.01 patch and QuickTime 3.02 (because QuickTime 4.12 was giving me the black object problem among others).
